Grover Cleveland "Always do right. This will gratify some people, and astonish the rest." Mark Twain "Politics is the art of the possible." Otto von Bismarck PRIMARY ELECTION: OCTOBER 3 GENERAL ELECTION: NOVEMBER 7 si 3rtf g 3 S I.. By THE THING I have an artist friend. He paints and does sculpture, and sees the world differently than you or I do. He comes to Nloab every September for the Music Festival, and this fall he planned to do some work between concerts. He wanted to do a "site piece" outdoors constructed wholly from rock (hereinafter 'The Thing"). He finally chose Ken's Lake as the location for The Thing after running into roadblocks from public and private landowners along Mill Creek. Ken's Lake had one clear advantage over the various Mill Creek sites - it was easily accessible to his pickup truck which had an hydraulic lift on the back. The creating of The Thing was a group effort - the artist had a rough blueprint in mind but all who came to move and place rock exercised judgment over the proper spacing and alignment of its component parts. The center of The Thing was first chosen close to the water's edge, and its perimeter measured and marked. The Thing's rim was built by arranging rocks in a circle - some of which must have weighed several hundred pounds. The exterior walls - some two feet high - were constructed by adding smaller stones which fit comfortably in the spaces left unoccupied by the larger rocks. Then the walls were sloped downward to the center spire which rose to a greater height than the outside walls. The framework was finished after one hard days' work. The next day was more leisurely spent chinking and smoothing the surface of The Thing. Many more people came to look and to work - probably 15 people contributed before it was completed the next day. There at Ken's Lake it stood and stands still - puzzling and confounding those who happen upon it. If it is not destroyed by persons hostile to its existence, The Thing will remain inscrutable at Ken's Lake for a long while. It will be submerged for most of the year and provide a sheltered habitat for crayfish and fingerlings. It will no doubt snag more than one angler's line. It will continue to bewilder those who don't understand why anyone would spend the time and energy to make it. I'm not sure I understand. But as he viewed The Thing against the backdrop of the Manti LaSals at sunset, the artist said with evident satisfaction, "Isn't it absurd - and beautiful!"
