Show PAGE 18 THE ZEPHYRJAN-FE-B 1994 have to say that one of the news stories that seemed to go on the longest was the 30 year anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Thirty years I don't know seems like as good a time as any to let the whole thing go. The news was also filled, it seemed, with a tiny little man with an obnoxious little commercials. twang; a man who gave a whole new meaning to the Energizer Bunny is the election What we've seen in the past when someone loses a presidential subsequent fading quietly if not gracefully into the mists of book tours or something. But not Mr. Perot. That giant sucking sound you hear is just Ross recharging his rbattery. On the religious front Mother Theresa was beset with health problems but came through them to continue her work with the poorest of the poor, never forgetting to admonish them against the evils of birth control. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the Pope was giving similar admonishments to his flock in the States. Utah, while not traditionally viewed as a Catholic state, gave its support with unbridled enthusiasm, pushing ahead to become the 6th fastest growing state west of the Mississippi. Ecumenical overtones? Y It's good to see these two religions finding common ground It's a little sad to see all the dead deer on the road, where they have been killed by cars, after searching in vain for their old wintering grounds: Which are now houses. Riled with all those people. Yes, many weird things happened this year (can you say Beavis and Butthead?) But then there were the other things. Moments of hope. Like Reginald Denny walking across the courtroom to hug the moms of the two men who had attempted to murder him; The Israeli and Palestinian leaders coming together for that brief moment to touch; people whose houses were burning around them, going back in, risking and even losing their lives to rescue helpless animals; President Clinton appointing a Secretary of Interior who can actually spell the word wilderness. Now that I think about it, there were a lot of those moments. And for each one that made the news, there was one that stayed quietly back in the wings. Maybe it was just a word, an anonymous deed, a momentary image. Maybe it was nothing anyone could even pin down. But it happened. And it was good. Subject to Change I Subject to Change , , By Gherie Gilmore - - When I was a child and thus powerless to object my mom dragged me out of bed at something like 3:00 in the morning and made me stand on our front porch and watch the eclipse of the moon. She was pretty excited about it. I was scared by the weird orange-re- d color it turned. That was my main reaction. So in the ensuing years I have not actually observed any subsequent lunar eclipses. I thought I should this year, since the next one isn't scheduled for another 3 years and who knows what could happen between now and then. Also, this is the first time since the First Thanksgiving that an eclipse has occurred on this date. Pretty profound, huh? Well, I couldn't think of anything profound about it either. But I watched. My immediate reaction was, "Wow. It is cold out here." And so it went as I tried to think of what has happened during the past year. Nothing really leapt to mind. I mean, most of the big news items were fairly negative events fires, floods, youth violence, wars and warlords, James Watt announcing plans to run for president To find something positive or even vaguely interesting I would have to go through all those old newspapers. Those rolls and rolls of microfilm, the viewing of which makes me quite literally sick. Then I realized hey, this is the Lame Issue. No one expects it to be interesting. This is my chance to just meander back over those events which stuck in my mind. This shouldn't take long. The year began with, of course, the Super Bowl. A Dallas player by the name of Leon Lett ran this great run, and was almost into the end zone when he just kind of handed the ball to a Buffalo player. It turned out OK, because Dallas still won. But it was still weird. Then, on liianksgiving, when even more people were watching, he made another small mistake. OK, so Dallas lost the game. Many people blamed poor Leon. But many others felt that he was getting a bum rap. After all, if Dallas had maintained a respectable lead, it wouldn't have come down to one lousy field goal. Staying with our sports theme for a minute, it seems that football and yes, even baseball have been replaced by a new sport called Barney-bashin- g. Yes, threats and even bodily attacks against Barney, the 6'4M purple dinosaur. Kids love him. I have personally observed them putting down their toy guns and sitting in a happy and fashion for an entire half hour to watch Barney. What's Barney's secret? What does he do to inspire this devotion? Well he says, T love you" a lot. Over and over. What does he do to inspire such hatred in so many adults? Same thing, I guess.
