Just what exactly Is 'more complicated? Merv: I would say that lawyers are making It more complicated. Theres a surplus of lawyers and theyre looking for Jobs. Every single little thing where It can earn the money, they are going out and canvassing people. So there are more and more court cases coming up. Im In hot water with the lawyers for saying that, but It Is a fact Zephyr: But you're speaking In real general terms about the law profession. How, within the county attorney's office has It become more complicated? Merv: It's Just more detail that you have to go Into nowadays. There are more requirements about what you have to do on each case. The cases themselves have become more Involved. I believe It takes more research than It used to. Im not a lawyer, Its my opinion. I may be wrong, but I dont think so. Zephyr: This was the lustlflcatlon for the deputy position? Merv: It was not only that The real crux of the matter Is to get the work done. I dont believe that our county attorney could do all the work. I'm not saying anything against our county attorney. I dont know If any county attorney could do all the work. But certainly, Elaine had a lot of work to do, and more than she probably could handle. It's our responsibility to see that people get a quick trial and so forth. Merv: Yes. But how, you ask? Let's talk about the medical waste Incinerator. Unless medical waste Is handled property, It Is an environmental concern. Zephyr: But this Incinerator Is not lust for local waste. Is this a good location to be collecting regional medical wastes In the heart of a national park area? Merv: My suggestion to air quality and solid waste when they had the public to have It elsewhere. But there was enough pressure from upstate for It to be was hearing I sited here. thought it should be cloMr to where the medical waste Is generated. I spoke with Lance Christie who Is very knowledgeable In the field of Incineration (Me Lance's story on the medical waste Incinerator In this Issue); we organized a special meeting with air quality, going over the details. Lance came back to me and said, this Isnt such a bad one. As such, I wont say I changed my mind, but my own Judgment then was that It was a viable operation. And It Is very restricted.
