Show ' - - THE PRESS-BULLETI- ' : PAGE THREE mi mm GENTLE COWS ARE SUPERIOR Animals Seem to Partake of DieposL tion of Keeper Economical Grains for Heifers. To have gentle cows there Is noth-ing like raising-the- yourself. The cow seems to partake of the disposi-tion of her keeper. No dairyman cun afford to have a man In his stable who is rough and quick tempered. Many well-bre- d cows are ruined be-cause they were hot properly fed and developed Into cowhqod. Ground out-me- al and wheat bran with the addition of u sinull amount of flaxseed meal are the most economical grains for the calf and heifer. These grains, fed In con-nection with mixed hay, bright corn fodder and wheat straw, will develop bone and muscle and build up a sound, vigorous constitution with a capacity to eat and digest a large quantity of food. It is a common saying "that a cow that is a big eater Is also a big milker." And this is true. A heifer should be well fed before calving and given dally exercise. Calves and heifers should not be tied up In a warm stable with the cows, they thrive best in an open shed with a sheltered yard for exercise. An energetic and Influential organ lzatlon on the Taclflc const, the Cali-fornia State Automobile association, has carried on some investigations af-fording definite figures of the value of good roads. It secured the help of Prof. J. B." Davidson of the University of California and Austin B. Fletcher, state highway engineer, in carrying on a large number of tests of the pull re-quired to move a standard farm wagon loaded to make the gross weight 6.000 pounds. This wagon was hauled In some cases by a two-to- n truck and In other cases by a team of good draft horses, weighing about 1,600 pounds each. Tests have shown that a pull of 27 to 30 pounds per ton of gross load was heeded to haul the wagon on unsur-face- d concrete roads. When the con-crete was surfaced with oil and screen-ings the pull was increased to about SO pounds. About 65 pounds were needed for hauling on water-boun- d macadam and on bituminous concrete laid on top of cement concrete. On good gravel roads a pull of 65 to 82 pounds was needed, while on loose gravel the pull was 263 pounds, the highest record In any of the tests. About 80 pounds were required for hauling on bitumin-ous macadam. On earth roads 02 pounds were required for hauling over a good surface covered with 1 Inches of loose dust, 09 pounds over an ordl- - '.41 fT7iZl ""1fl j ULj fill if r i " y - , "'r . ' 'x ,2 " . " ' x x A" Road Through California Forest. nary dirt road with dust 8 Inches deep In places, and 21S pounds over a muddy earth road. The significance of these figures lies in the fact that on a good earth road It Is necessary to exert three times the pull that Is required on a con-crete road, and nearly twice the pull required on a macadam road. Fur-thermore, when the earth road be-comes muddy, a condition which does not affect traffic on good pavements, the pull Is more than doubled. TO IDENTIFY DAIRY CATTLE j Difficult to Distinguish Certain Heifers From Certain Cows Few Years After Birth. Every farmer who keeps dairy cat-tle should adopt some scheme for lden-- 1 tlfylng his stock. It Is easy to remein-- ' ber the cows in a herd by their names, It Is quite another thing to be able to distinguish certuin heifers from cer- -' tain cows, two or three years after-birth. If one Is In dully association, with his stock, he might be able tu j remember that one calf Is from this' cow, another from that cow, and so on, ' but If the calves are put away on pas-- 1 ture, the chances are that at the eiid of a year their ancestry will be for-gotten, i With breeders of purebreds, It Is strictly essential to be able to trace' the ancestry. Registration rules spe- - clfy this, and when a heifer or bull calf Is registered, Its markings must be not--J ed on u card provided for the purpose. i VALUE OF PREPOTENT BULLS Little' High-Clas- s Animal Stands Chance of Transmitting Inferior Qualities of Ancestor. The bull Is half the herd. If he Is prepotent, as all good bulls are, he Is much more than half the herd. The purebred bull, all of whose ancestors for several generations were first-clas- s individuals, stands very little chance of transmitting the qualities of some Inferior remote ancestor. In the dairy record center at Fanners" Union, On-tario, there were 14 herds of grade cattle. Seven of these herds, compris-ing 82 cows, had always used grade sires. The other seven, comprising 84 cows, bad used purebred sires for Purebred Bull. many years. At creamery prices for milk, one year's record showed a bal-ance of $31.51 per cow In favor of the seven herds that had used purebred sires. ' j ROADS INDEX OF CHARACTER Determine Importance of Country, Limiting or Aiding Its Advance --Should Be Built The roads are an index of the char- - j acter of any country, determining Its Importance and limiting or aiding Its advance. A country that Isn't worth a good road Isn't worth what Its land sells for and soon won't be worth liv-ing In. No community that has ever Improved Its ronds, has ever regretted It, for road Improvement Is a good In-vestment for any community. Since the roads are for nW the people, they should be built by all the people with state and federal aid. WINTER EXERCISE FOR CALF When Weather Is Favorable Young Animal Should Be Turned Out In Sheltered Yard. Each dny during the winter, when the weather Is favorable, the calves need to be turned out Into a shelter-ed yard for exercise, which Is neces-sary for their proper growth and health. It Is also very important that the calves, from a very early age, be given all the pure, fresh water they care to drink each day. The pens should be disinfected frequently. Quick-lim- e Is excellent to sprinkle on the floor each time It Is cleaned, and a frequent spraylug with some stand-ard coal-tar-di- p solution .will prove beneficial. MOTOR TRAFFIC IS GREATER Significant Feature of Road Develop, j ment Is Construction of Bet- - ter Surfaces. A most significant feature of road development Is the construction of bet-ter surfaces as a result of automobile truflic, for It Is estimated that there (.re approximately 2,500,000 autos in use on the roads of the country, or one car for every mile of road. The mo-- 1 tor traffic is greater than traffic of all' kinds 12 years ago. j Urges Permanent Roads. That road-buildin- g along permanent lines should be prosecuted as a part j of our national war program was the determination of the chamber of commerce of the United States, at Its meeting held at Atlantic City, N J. COW IS CREATURE OF HABIT Heifer Should Be Milked Up to Within Two Months of Next Lacta-tion Period. The length of time which a cow will milk depends very largely upon the length of her first milking period. While the tendency for a long milk-ing period Is supposed to be hered-itary in dulry cattle, they are also crea-tures of habit, and a heifer should, therefore, be milked up to within two months of her next lactation period whether or not she gives enough milk to puy for the uiilklug. Roads Expand In Vlnter. Concrete rouds expand most In win-ter and contract most In summer, ac-cording to the United States bureau of standards, because of Increases o;' decreases in the moisture they con-tain. |
