Show ! SAVING WATER FOR IRRIGATION l - - People who have not seen the work cannot r.eadsse the task the i Delta Land u ater Company has assumed, and in fact is about to complete this winter. Stopped the Seepage First, at the close of the irrigation season this Fall the company commenced com-menced t'.:e work of constructing a new intake for the canal system of the Beaver County Irrigation Company. Com-pany. This work included the con- struction of idver a mile and a half of new canal, much of which is line.! with concrete, at the head of the system. sys-tem. This work is entirely completed com-pleted and tests have been made i which prove that the object of the company the saving of water loss from' seepage- ha:j been more fully realized than the management ex-: ex-: ported. Tfiis great loss of water ! from seepage through the gravel of J the old river bed has been cut to the I minimum.. The Dam Repaired Second, the work of stopping the i leakage at the Rocky Ford dam wan undertaken. Holes were drilled at intervals down lo bedrock and liquid cement forced into them under pressure pres-sure filled the crevices of the porous formation of volcanic rock and made a practically concrete dam, water light, and the loss or water, which was very great, has been effectually stopped. Xo water is now lost from the great reservoir tttat is not voluntarily volun-tarily released through the tunnel i and big gates provided for the out- let. j Conserve the Surplus Third, is the work now in progress of rebuilding the old dam on the Beaver Bottoms for the storage of waters for the use of the settlers of that section. The cold weather makes this job a most disagreeable one and the work difficult to handle. But it will require only a short time to close the old breach. This will provjde storage of sufficient water to supply the needs of the Beaver Bottoms Bot-toms settlers whim they need it. There should be no future need for v,;.ioy i;ie Rocky Ford dam for the Bottoms soltloi-s ;i ntl the cc.n---e-quen. ,re;:t bs of v.ai'er in runnim: . tit o same in the open river lied or (:: tils a dr-ianre of twenty miles or more to reach the lands in the Beaver Bea-ver Bottoms in the dry weather of te summer. ' V.':rt r Outlook for l'MS With these items of water conservation conser-vation a reality together with the fart that the water is coming into the reservoir now in considerable quantity and (be big pond is filling constant!:.', and with the further fact that the great water s'aed is carrying carry-ing much snow even thus early in the season, there seems to be every reason rea-son to believe (bat. the lands of the Milford project that are now in cultivation cul-tivation will have sjiffirient water during 1918. a |
