Show ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NOTES The city government is now being introduced into the fifth and sixth grades of the Milford Elementary school. By the introduction of this form of self government into these grades we hope to teach the pupils some very valuable practical lessons in civics and in this way to better prepare them for real citizenship in our great democracy. While this system does not include all of the municipal officers it will include all of the rights and privileges of that form of government. The Milford sixth grade received a very pleasing letter from one of the Parowan sixth grade pupils. The letter was written about the lumber industry in Parowan and may be Interesting In-teresting to others in Milford beside the sixth grade. The following is the letter: "PtiTnwnn TTtoh "Nov 30 1917 "Sixth Grade, , Milford, Utah ' "Dear Friends. As you are inter- ested in Utah industries I am writ- . ing to you about lumbering in Paro- wan. Parowan is one of the few (owns in Utah that saws more lum- ! ber than it uses. There are five mills running during the summer 1 season, sawing about 1,200,000 feet , of lumber each year. The lumber is sold at $27,50 per thousand feet. The main kinds of lumber sawed are ', white pine and yellow pine. The ' country is rather rough and logging is quite dangerous. There are some very large trees in Parowan and it is very interesting to watch them fall. After hacking and sawing the tree falls to the ground with a crash. After the logs are cut down all of the limbs are cut off and the logs are ready for the mill. The loggers come with their wagons and haul the logs to the mill, where the logs are sawed into lubmer and slabs. Then the logs are hauled to town and sold. "Write and tell me about some of the industries in Milford. Yours truly, Laura Mitchell." |
