Delta Airlines bankruptcy has workers expecting company changes By AMANDA TUST Contributing Writer Following the Sept. 14 bankruptcy filing by Delta Airlines, the 3,900 employees, including 713 pilots, based out of Salt Lake City International Airport can expect more pay, benefit, pension and job cuts within the company. Kelly Collins, senior communication specialist for the Delta Airline Pilots Association, said following the bankruptcy filing, the airline presented a concessionary proposal to the Delta Airline Pilots Association, including a $325 million request. She said the pilots' union is still reviewing the proposal cuts, which are broken up into categories such as salary, benefits and work rule pay, which includes layover pay. "The pilots are definitely concerned about their careers and the future of Delta," Collins told The Park Record. The company cuts within Delta will be part of an attempt by the company to save $3 billion annually by the end of 2007. This is in addition to the $5 billion Delta said it was looking to save by the end of 2006. During a joint Senate and House Transportation Committee hearing regarding the Delta Air Lines bankruptcy, Capt, John Malone, chair of the Delta Master Executive Council, stated that Delta pilots have already voluntarily reduced the value of their pay and benefits in the past year by over 40 percent, essentially saving the airline $1 billion per year for five years as part of prior Delta, said there will be a restructuring of Cincinnati hub to include more international flights, but there have been no changes to the Salt Lake hub yet announced. According to the Park City Board of Realtors, there are many Delta employees who own homes in Park City. The Delta employees not only add to the local population in Park City, but also play an active role in supporting the community. Dana Ardovino, scholarship advisor for Park City High School, said Delta families in the area sponsor college scholarships for Park City High School seniors each year. She said the Delta families donated three scholarships last year, each worth $608. "Even last year when the pay cuts were in place, the families were really generous," Ardovino said. concessionary negotiations. Malone said the new concessionary request includes another round of pay and benefit cuts, including approximately 30 percent more of the pilots' contract value. "Starting over is not an alternative to most Delta pilots because we exist in a seniority-based system, and we cannot take our seniority to another company," he stated during the hearing. "That said, many Delta pilots are already exploring other employment opportunities with some seeking flying jobs overseas." Even with the predicted job and flight changes within the company. Salt Lake City looks to continue as a main hub for flights. In the past year, Delta shut-down its Dallas/Ft. Worth operation and planned to divert those assets to grow hub operations in Atlanta, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City. Anthony Black, spokesperson for Drink Bad Ass Coffee and find a new roommate Annual event provides housing information for newcomers to Park CHy By AMANDA TUST Contributing Writer From October to January Park City experiences an influx of skiers and seasonal workers who arrive in preparation of another winter season. A scramble for housing begins, and in many cases a search for roommates. Bad Ass Coffee of Park City and Mountainlands Community Housing Trust have teamed together to help make this process a little easier for newcomers. Bad Ass Coffee of Park City will host an annual "Roommate Roundup" Wednesday nights from 5:30 pm, to 7 p.m.. beginning Oct. 12 and running through December. Nicole Butolph, transitional housing coordinator/housing resource specialist for Mountainlands Community Housing Trust, said the purpose of the "Roommate Roundup" is to provide people with housing resources and face-to-face roommate searches. "I wouldn't ever pick a roommate from a two-line description in the paper," she said, "and it gives them an opportunity to meet each other." Michel Boroff, owner of Bad Ass Coffee of Park City, said her business has hosted the event for the past five years. She said each Wednesday night there are usually 12 to 50 people who attend. "It is son of a neutral playing field," Boroff said, ft 'They can come and meet SCOTT S\UE/PARK ments have fill-in sections for security deposit information, stretch of time arrangements, utility payments and / wouldn't ever Dick 3 momate from r and talk. The word spreads fast about the "Roommate Roundup," and Boroff said she has already received calls from people who are interested in the event, including employers in town. She said Bad Ass Coffee of Park City has a community message board that also serves as a" resource and starting point for people who are new to town. "A lot of times this is the first time people have rented away from home, so it is general information about Park City,'1 Boroff said. Bad Ass Coffee or Park City is located at 651 Park Avenue.
