question we frequently hear bear asked and it is a question Vu estion of no small importance to the latter day saints we as a people have labored and are still laboring under great injustice from the hands bands of a neighboring state the latter day saints have had their property destroyed and their houses made desolate dei dej by the hands of the mis AM sou rians murders have been committed with impunity and man many mady y i in i n consequence of oppression 8 sion slon barbarism and cruelty have slept the sleep of death they have been obliged to ilce lice from their fos jos possessions sessions into a distant land in ill the tha chilling frosts of winter robbed spoiled desolate houseless and home ess without an any y just pretext or shadow of 0 law without havi having ng violated the laws of that state or of the united states and have had to wander as exiles in a strange land without as yet being able to obtain any redress for their grievances we have hitherto adopted every legal measurer eure first we petitioned to the state of nils alis gouri gouni but in vain we have memorialized congress but they have turned a deaf car to our supplication and referred us again to the state and justice M of missouri doubtless many of the tile members of that honorable body were not sufficiently informed of the enormity I 1 and extent of fhe the crimes of our persecutors nor of the indelible stain which nur hur national escutcheon has hag received through their inhuman darlng darid daring they have been allowed to revel in blood and luxuriate in the miseries of the oppressed and no man has laid it to heart the fact is that gentlemen of respectability and refinement who live in a civilized society find it difficult to believe that such enormities enor mitie Is could be practised practiced in a republican government but our wrong cannot slumber such suca t tyranny and oppression must not be passed passe over in silence our injuries though past are not forgotten by us they still in our bosoms and the blood of the innocent yet cries for justice and as american citizens we ire have appealed peal real ed and shall still continue to appeal to the legally gally constituted authorities of tile tiie land for redress in the hopes that justice which has long iong ong slumbered may be aroused in our defence that the spirit which burned in the bosoms ot of the patriots of seventy six may fire the bouls souls of their descendants and though hough slow that their indignation may yet be arots aroused ed at the fhe injustice of the oppressor and that they may yet mete out justice to our adversaries and step forward in the defence of the innocent we shall ask no one to commit themselves on our account we want no steps taken but what are legal constitutional and honorable but we are dwa rma rican fecan citizens and as american citizens we have rights in common with all that live liva under the folds of the tar star spangled banner our rights have been trampled upon by lawless miscreants we have been robbed of our liberties by influence and all those honorable ties that ought to govern and characterize columbian C Colum olum bias blas sons have been trampled in the dust still we are ahler Ahter mer ican iran citizens and as american citizens we claim the privilege of beinar bein heard ill in tile the councils of our nation we have been wronged abused robbed and banished and we seek redress such crimes cannot canno t slumber in republican publican america 1 the cause canse of common humanity would revolt rev rek olt at it and re republicanism would hide bide it its Cs head in disgust dis guat we make these remarks for the purpose of drawing drawing dr awing aming the attention of our brethren to this subject both at home and abroad that we vie m may max t fix upon the man who will be the most lik likely ly to render us assis assistance tarlee in obtaining redress for our Fie ele grievances vances and not only give ou our own votes but out use our influence to obtain others and if the voice af suffering innocence will not sufficiently arouse the rulers of our nation to investigate our case perhaps a voto vote vot of from fifty to one hundred thousand may rouse them from their lethargy we shall fix upon the man of our choice and notify our friends duly i I 1 published the following in the same number be r of the extract the following from the neighbor of this date ANTI antl MORMONISM with respect to the carthage meeting I 1 take upon myself to deny the charges in toto and challenge them to the proof IE if we harbor horse thieves among us ai as is basely asserted let the man that has lost his horse publish his name and the name of the villain or how he knows him to be a mormon and where he lie is harbored that we may have something more than vague assertions th they well know that no such proof can be p produced i doduc but that the charges had their birth in the minds of one or two artless artess scoundrels jug for revenge for their late disappointments the whole of orthe the charges are a tissue of falsehoods cot zot up with the idea of intimidating a peaceable bo ly of citizen citizens but sir we set such designing knaves at defiance and laugh at their threats treating them hem with utter contempt but ever ready to abide by the truth JOHN GREENHOW 1 elder reuben bedlock wrote che
