West Valley View in DP Thurs., Sept. 4, 1980 Annual 9 U tailing THE LEGISLATURE (30il!icD3 BfSlNATOB BIU BAB TON Diifrict II A poll was taken recently by one of the daily newspapers, asking two questions of Utahns. One askindiv- ed iduals if they favored equal treatment for women and minorities in the various facets of d a i v life. The answer by a resounding majority of Utahns indicated they did favor it. The other question asked was if they favored ratification of the equal Rights Amendment. By a similar majority the answer was no. Many people had a difficult time understanding why the contradictory findings. It was apparent to me that the findings were indeed FOODS & DRUGS 2600 WEST 4700 SOUTH PRESCRIPTIONS Dependable Accurate Service filledquickly Save Now! Few of us would argue with the first article of the Amendment, which merely states that there will be no discrimination on the basis of sex, race or creed. In fact, several laws as well as several state constitutions already guarantee that. Every day or two we read about somone winning a lawsuit because of equal rights laws already in existence. The second article that states in effect that Congress will have the responsibility to legislate any additional laws that are necessary to enforce the first article is what frightens most j. people. Having witnes-se- d what we have with employers being forced to use quotas in employing women and minorities, and seeing the abuses that have taken place, we need not stretch our imagination to any extreme to see what could happen if Congress tries to cover every small facet of equal rights with new laws. The ERA can never make women equal to man, nor can it make man equal to woman. Both have their places on earth. Man was meant to be the stronger sex and women the weaker. Man, to do the harder work and women the homemaker. Needless to say, in this day and age many women have to go out of the home to work to earn a living and many do it because it is their choice. Many women have proved they can go out and compete with men in certain vocations and many have excelled. To these women that have, they should be getting compensation equal to that of the man doing similar work. It is my firm belief that ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment can do nothing to further rights of the indivual. The many laws that have already been created, among Chicken of the Sea CHUNK LIGHT Americas attempts to offer individual rights. We have already seen reverse discrimin- ation caused by existing laws and we have seen the quota system force hiring on the basis of sex and race, rather than the true ability of the individual. I further feel that the extension of alloted time for the ERA ratificaiton went against the true interpretation of our constitution. If a proposed amendment cannot be ratified within the legally alloted time, it is (See Page 7B, Col. 9) Folgers TUNA IN W ATER.
