Show Page 8 Signpost Sept. 28, 1973 Can't anyone else matter to you? Volunteer: When ... when did you decide to kill yourself? Caller: I've been thinking about it for a long time. You know ... sometimes I get serious, other times ... well, you know, just play with the idea to see how people react. Volunteer: What about... Caller: Well.'-this morning I finally decided to do it. Volunteer: Right now? Caller: I don't even know why I bothered calling you. I mean it's no use talking to anyone anyway Volunteer: Well, I'm glad you did call - tell me, what have you been thinking about lately? School, work, some girl ... Caller: Well ... lately I've been thinking about how the world is now. You know ... how nobody gives a damn about their neighbors and 1 don't know ... it just doesn't seem worth all the problems ... Volunteer: What about your family or your friends? Don't tell me you don't have any friends at all? What about them? Surely someone cares whether you're alive or dead? Caller: ... I ... I used to ... think so ... but now I just don't know ... All right Mr. or Ms. College Student, admittedly this is purely fictional. But, it just could have been real. There are an awful lot of people who committ suicide who probably could have been talked out of it. But what's all this mean to you, a Weber State College student? You have your own worries right? Sure you do. Brotherhood and war Now let's think back a while to just a few years ago. Memories of demonstrations fill the mind. Many of the demonstrations were about things such as war, hate, irrelevent school subjects, free love, brotherhood. Can you remember when your neighbor mattered more to you than a $12,000 a year job because the job was making bomb fins? Or at least you said it would if you had that kind of job. Remember? But the times have truely changed. People now walk around doped out of their mind and no cares because "Man, it's his own trip." Is this kind of thing for you? Or do you get your kicks out of helping someone get off dope, seeing the sparkle in the eyes that were once glazed over? Enjoy doing good? Do you enjoy doing something good for someone else even though you know there's no money in it for you? Well, if you do like to do something for nothing, have you ever thought of volunteering for' the Campus Listening and In- The 1973-74 Subscription Concerts (hffleiiSei ics All concerts in the Weber State College Fine Arts Center at 8 p m Tuesday, October 9 Bach Mozart Shostakovich Handel Mendelssohn Suite No 3 in D Maior Symphony No 41 in C Major.
