Show orientation i//ue A2 MONDAY* AUGUST 21 -2006 MB I would like to welcome you all back to campus for what is sure to be one of the most exciting semester at Utah Valley State. Over the summer everyone on campus has been busy putting together some amazing things to kick off the year. First of all, the student government would like to invite all students to come out to our Week of Welcome or "WOW" activities. There will be something for everyone this week; just look for the posters and banners across campus for a schedule of events. I am thrilled to announce that our new library will be breaking ground this semester. Rest assured that the disruption in parking will soon give way to a state-of-the-art library that will be the envy of every other college in the state. There will be facilities there for group study, individual study, as well as a cafe for all those study-time cravings. The 190,000 square foot structure (soon to be the largest building on campus) is scheduled to be completed for the 2008 fall semester. Please come and join us in a ground breaking ceremony Wednesday September 6, at 10:30 a.m. The Ira Fulton challenge is also in full swing as this semester starts. This challenge is an opportunity for students, alumni, faculty and staff to give back to the school in donations with the promise that each donation will be matched by Ira and Mary Lou Fulton. With this money there will be new scholarships created on campus, new programs started and existing programs made better. Some of the money earned will also contribute to our new library as well as help in UVSC's campaign to attain University Status. No matter where you are on campus, this challenge will affect your studies and surroundings. I encourage you to take this opportunity to sacrifice one taco and give at least one dollar back to UVSC. It is an exciting time to be at UVSC, an institution which is being recognized as one of the top four comprehensive colleges in the West. Students should feel proud to say they are a Wolverine and should feel proud to walk the halls of this school. One of the biggest issues facing us as students is the inequality in state funds to UVSC. All should know that UVSC receives only $3,262 dollars per student from the state. It may sound like a lot to us poor college students but when considering that average state funding to other schools per student is $6,245 dollars you can start to see the inequality. It's a 15% difference in funding that UVSC is not getting to support the education of the students here. [ will be in the halls asking for your help and support to ask the legislature to bridge the gap of lack in funding. Again, I would like to welcome new students here for the first time, and returning students who are back for more. Please fee! free to stop by my office (room SC105) if you have any questions or concerns about the campus. We would love to have every student have a voice in the way this campus is run. Please come and get involved because you take from college only what you put into it. Good luck in your studies! Sincerely, Andrew Stone Student Body President W elcome to Utah Valley State College whether you're a new or returning student. The new school year always brings new excitement and new experiences. The college is now fully engaged in a university campaign which will be considered in the legislative session next year. The school has grown so much and continues to grow that we expanding our fundraising efforts. During the year you may hear about the "Fulton Challenge." Ira and Mary Lou Fulton, owners of Fulton Homes in Arizona and well-known philanthropists, have given a fundraising challenge to the students, faculty, staff and alumni of UVSC. Ira and Mary Lou have invited all of the individual schools at UVSC to set and accomplish a fund-raising goal by the end of 2006. The student government has set a goal of $24,000 which is basically $1 per student. If the goals set by the individual schools are met, the Fultons will match the amount of each school's goal which would bring the $24,000 amount up to $48,000. If you wish to contribute you may contact the student government office in the Sorensen Student Center. I look forward to being with you throughout this year and if you see me in the hallway feel free to stop me for a visit. You may also send me an email through MyUVSC found on the UV Link page.
