Show president lays a cornerstone BEVERLY, Mass, Aug 31. In laying lay-ing the corner stone of the Y. M. C. A, building here today. President Taft announced that Beverly would continue to bo the summer capital of the country, ftt any rate for two years more. Melville V.'oodbury, who presided at the ceremonies, referred to the President Pres-ident as "Beverly's most distinguished distinguish-ed summer boarder." The big block of granite measured 3x4 feet and no mortar hail been spread when tho President took tip the silver trowel. Ho worked In silence si-lence for nearly five minutes and then, with reddened face, looked up and laughingly inquired: "Where's the mason? Where's my boss?"' Busy on the Job. Everyone laughed and the mason stepped forward. He gave some directions, di-rections, but did not offer to relieve the chief magistrate of the trowel, and Mr. Taft resumed his Job. When he had applied the last of the cement the mason smoothed off the edges, nnd the stone was lowered. The President helped swing the granite block, and tho crowd applauded applaud-ed vociferously. |
