And yet this state imperts lai'Ke quantities fiom Idaho. One great drawback to the industry of potato raising in this state is the great variety of teed planted. No two farmeisin the same neighborhood plant the same seed, consequently it is hard to get a carload of onekina of potato. In order to give an incentive to the production of any standard variety of potato, the National Copper bank of Salt Lake has decided to give a valuable solid silver cup and money prizes. The contest will be restricted to Utah boys under eighteen years of age and will be an annual event. While the largest yield of one variety varie-ty of the vegetable will stand a good eharce of annexing the prize, the quality of the potato also will . be taken into consideration in the judging. judg-ing. The cup will be one of the most beautiful offered in any competition in this sfate. It will stand 34 inches high and will cost $500. Around the base will be carved the roots and potatoes po-tatoes as they grow. The vines will twine upward and around the cup and handles. The state shield will, be carved on one side and a potato field on the other. The inscription will read "National Copper bank, Salt Lake, Utah. Potato Trophy." This cup will be placed upon exhibition at every county and state fair in the intermountain region. The basewiil be made of ebony and bear silver plates with the names of the winners inscribed. The award will be made each year at the state fair and a competent potato grower from one of the neighboring states will be inviied to act as judge. Samples of the vegetable grown by the contestants will . be shown at the lair also. The cup can only be w n outright by the same person winning ihe compet.it'on three years in succession. The fact that the first winner will be one year older at tne time of the second con'est will not preclude him from p;.. cipating. The winner will receive a easn p-'ize of $100 in addition to having his name and yield engraved on the cup. It is proi os.'d to confine the competition to the state of Utah this year, but Idaho will be included in |
