Presented with Ring Second Ward Meeting House Scene of Social Gathering f As a tribute to his worth, gentlemanly gentle-manly bearing, courteous .demeanor, and In token of tho love and esteem with which ho Is tegaidcd by the teachers whom ho has directed during the last live jcars, Ex-Superlntcndcnt Merrill, of the city schools, was tendered tend-ered a teccptlon and presented with an elegant ring last Tuesday evening. The affair was held in the Second ward meeting house and was in every way a most delightful social success, a complete surprise to Mr. Merrill and a touching Incident In connection with his severance of business and social ties that have been most pleasant pleas-ant to both teachers and superintendent superintend-ent and ftultful for the schools of the city. C, University of Utah, Oswego Stato Normal of New Yotk, a student of Leland Stanfotd and Chicago Universities, Prof. Merrill Mer-rill was ably prepated to take charge of the Logan schools. During his connection thctewlth ho has ptoved himself a most conscientious student )f the needs of the schools and tho methods to bettci them, has shown inaiked consldciatlon for the teachers themselves, cvci exhibiting a kindly kind-ly sympathy for them in their tilals and tabulations and has ptoved a a helpful stay and suppott In so many Instances that he has Indeared him self to his suboidlnatcs and grown into their alfectlons to such an extent that his dcpattuic fiom their counsels Is tegatded almost as a calamity at least with the most sincere regtet. Practically the entile cotps of teach-ets teach-ets at the present time weic at the reception Tuesday evening, as well as a laige number of enthusiastic ad-tnlrois ad-tnlrois among the teachers who have come in contact with him during the past live jcais, and each vied with the other In expressions of good will and best wishes for his future success and happiness in whatever ever field life's lot might cast him. The affair Tuesday evening was In the hands of a committee who carried out the plans with remarkable success. The teachers were asked for contributions contri-butions nnd the request was responded to with such a unanimity and generosity generos-ity that a magnificent rolled gold ring set with garnets was purchased and hidden away for tho eventful evening. Mrs. Morrill was apprised of the contemplated move as a matter of course, but Superintendent Merrill was kept in the daik, and not until the teachers In a body called at the Men 111 home Tuesday evening did the genial piofessor have an Inkling of the pleasuies In store for him. Tho entire assemblage adjourned to the ward meeting house where a splendid program was rendered In which Mr. Alexander Lcvvls.Mrs. Lois Ketrand Miss Eva Jones sang and Miss Sttslo Gates plajcd. At tho proper tlmo during tho evening's pleasures Miss Eva Jones was called upon for a recitation and according to prearrangement took oppottunlty to piesent the ring, and did so in tho following fol-lowing strain: "Di:au Mtt. Prof. Merrill was very deeply touched and sensed his appieefation In words that lent comfort and good cheer to those fiom whom he Is about to scpaiate.
