In Turkestan, on the right bank of ho Amou Darla, In a chain of rocky .il 11a near tho Dokharan town of Karkl aud a number of largo caves which, jpon examination some time ago, were found to lead to an underground city, built apparently long before tho Christian Chris-tian era. According to effigies, Inscriptions and designs upon tho gold and silver money unearthed from among tho ruins, tho existence of tho town "dates back to somo two centuries before the birth of Christ. The underground IJokhnran city Is composed of nu enormous labyrinth .of corridors, streets and squares, surrounded sur-rounded by bouses nnd other buildings two or three stories high. Tho edifices edi-fices contain all kinds of domestic utensils, pots, urns, vases "and so forth. In some of tho streets falls of earth and rock have obstructed tho passages, but generally tho visitor can walk about freely without so much as lowering his head. Tho high degroo of civilization attained at-tained by Oio Inhabitants of tho city Is shown by the fact that they built in several stories, by tho symmetry of tho streets and squares and by tho beauty of tho baked clay and metal utensils, and of the ornaments and coins which have been found.
