Show DEATH "OF PAUL KRUGER. One of the most romantic as well as one of the most conspicious figures of recent history was. that of Paul Kruger, former president of the ( Transvaal in South Africa. The admiration that was felt for him I and the respect shown for his sturdy 1 spirit of independence was a credit to ! human nature in general, even though ; some of their manifestations seemed prompted more by hatred of England than by love of the Boers. Paul Kruger was narrow and he was fanatical, and hie ideal of liberty was not unmixed with the purpose to pursue pur-sue his own will regaidless of Inferiors In-feriors among i'-'.s own race as well as among the blacks. But for all that his was a majestic figure, and during the period of the Boer war he held a prominent place in the world's respect and esteem. Oom Paul, as his friends and admirers ad-mirers liked to call him, died of old age, but it would be impossible to say to what extent that end was hastened by the conquest of the Boer republics and the failure of the Boer dream of i South' African independence of British control. But he kept his faith unconquerable un-conquerable to the end and died with a prayer for the cause of the Boer upon his lips. The modern conditions do not make men of the Paul Kruger mold, but it is fortunate that there still lingers in the human make-up enough of the primal spirit to cause modern men to admire him Pueblo Chieftain. |
