Show orientation i//ue MONDAY'AUGUST 21 '2006 AM wow Week of Welcome With the school year beginning, there are many stresses that students have to deal with. For example: the types of classes one should take; where to park; and most important where to live. Where a student will live can set the pace for how the school year will go. A bad apartment can make the school year miserable and a great one can even make grades fall because of the temptation to play with roommates and such instead of studying. Now that BYU students have to stay within such close proximity of campus, UVSC students get the pick of the litter as far as apartments in Orem come. So where to begin? A few tips for finding a good apartment: 1. Before signing any contract, ask to look around the apartment, which will rarely look like the advertised apartment. (The actual apartment will usually not look as nice and will probably have some sort of smell.) 2. Always ask about parking. Tow companies survive on towing students' cars in apartment complexes- they are not kidding when they say they tow after 1 a.m. Also, visitor parking is usually a hassle so in order for your friends to not get towed, ask about trn's type of parking as well. 3. When looking at the apartment listen for the neighbors because if you can hear them they can hear you, and then you spend the semester having noise wars. To some, this can be fun, but usually not during midterms or finals. (Also note that the girl living upstairs who walks around in clunky shoes all day is not fun to hear.) 4. Do research, and make sure to ask around. Find people who have lived in an apartment you may be considering, and ask questions to see if it fits your needs. Even ask current tenants to see if they like living in the apartment and/or area. Megan Leavitt 5 . Of utmost importance, if your apartment has stairs be sure it is compatible for mattress surfing or box diving. Seriously, make sure that the apartment is entertainment friendly. Everyone needs a good break from studying and serious aspects of life. Random fun is a necessity. 6. The last and most important rule of all is being aware of your surroundings and roommates. Be cautious of all those who come into your apartment-lock your bedrooms and front doors. One recent local incident: About a month ago in Provo 3 males found a roommate, a person who claimed to be a LDS returned missionary and a churchgoer appealing to the 3 roommate's sense of security. When the 3 roommates were away, this man stole all of their belongings and disappeared, and it's been revealed that he has pulled this scam in other states. Bad things happen and no one is immune; therefore, we must all be careful.
