Next fall when football gets underway with the preps in our area, Davis High School and Layton High School will be battling each other on the gridiron. At one time the two schools were regular in meeting each d full of other for a fall shootout, a series that was exciting games. Davis Jim Dickson and Laytons Joe Wood can be credited for getting the rivalry going again. Dickson was happy to see the series resume, citing many jam-packe- things such as financial reasons for the Its a good rivalry, he said, It ought to turn out to be our biggest gate receipt and I wouldnt be surprised to see it be Laytons best too. Davis will continue to play Clearfield and Weber in preseason, dropping the Ben Lomond game for the Layton game. Laytons Wood saw the game as a positive move, saying, The kids want it which is the most important thing. And you cant overlook the economics of it. We also have a lot of respect for Jim (Dickson) and his program and we will look forward to playing them." CLEARFIELDS JOY TRUSSELL Basketball previews to appear next week Darts, Lancers fare best in Layton High Tournament By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON They came from the south and they came from the north, strength brewing from both. But in the end, Box Elder High made a mountain to climb as the Bees racked up 210 first place points to win the fifth annual Layton High Wrestling Invitational held last Friday and Saturday at the high school. The traditionally strong Bees went away from the tournament with three first place champions and three more that took second to beat Granger who ended up with November athletes receive recognition KAYSVILLE The Reflex-Journ- al and J and J Engravings and Trophies are proud to present the male and female athletes of the month for November. Earning the female award for the Clearfield Falcons was Joy Trus-sel- l, a three-yea- r starter for the womens Falcon volleyball Lady team. The male recipient is now a winner as Davis Highs Rob Warden wins the distinction as the top male athlete during the month of November. Trussell was quite responsible for helping the Clearfield volleyball team to an overall record of 26-- 8 and a very respected third place finish in the state tournament. Her defense is what really sparkled, said Clearfield coach Mike Nelmelka, She did just an overall superior job for us from second-tim- e start to finish. Trussell started three years for Clearfield in volleyball and now she is one of the hubs of the undefeated Clearfield girls basketball team. Warden helped lead Davis High into the quarterfinals with some outstanding play on defense and some gutsy running at fullback. Despite the fact Davis lost to Bonneville in the quarterfinals. Warden was a pain in the side of the Lakers on both sides of the foot4-- A ball. Then when he was done shedding his football gear, Warden turned to wrestling and won his first match of the season at the weight division. Warden is considered to be one of the favorites to win the class in wrestling. 185-pou- 185-pou- Busy schedule slated for prep cage teams This weeks prep basketball action is loaded to the hilt. On Tuesday, Brighton was to travel to meet Davis in Kaysvil-l- e while Ogden was to visit Clearfield and Layton was to travel to meet East. On Friday Clearfield will travel to meet Ben Lomond, Layton will be at Woods Cross and Davis will play away from home at Ogden. On the following Tuesday, December 16, Clearfield travels to Kearns and Layton will travel to Davis. 165 points. Pleasant Grove ended up with 15912 points, Spanish Fork gained 26 V2 to place fourth and Davis High was fifth with 100 points. Layton made a respectable showing by tallying 92 points for sixth place. The rest of the teams and their respective point totals were Emery 8712, West Jordan 87'2, Weber 8212, Orem 65 12, Wasatch 64'2, Viewmont 5 8 , 1 2 Pineview 54'2, Bountiful 31 , Clearfield 27 and Roy 14. It was the seasons first major high school wrestling tournament which saw 192 preps battle for 12 championship slots. Amazingly enough, and for the first time since the tournament was organized, not a single champion emerged from a Davis County school. Two wrestlers however, Davis Rob Warden and Laytons Tim LaFette claimed second places during the Saturday night championship round. The following is a brief rundown of each of the county teams involved in the two-da- y event: VIEWMONT The Vikings, under the direction of second year head coach Bart Thompson, had a pair of wrestlers take third place. Jeff Fisher claimed a third place victory in the heavyweight class and Shandell Smoot took third in a class. very difficult Fisher got sweet revenge in his 155-pou- last match as he beat Darwin Holi- day of Emery who had earlier beat him in the second round. Fisher got in trouble in the first match and was pinned but came back Saturday night to beat Holiday with a pin of his own with 1:35 left in the third period. Smoot was ahead of Grangers Dave Marsh with just 30 seconds left but somehow found a way to lose that match, thus knocking him out of the championship bracket. Marsh, the defending that state champion, followed-udramatic win with another victory on Saturday night to win the title at 6-- 3 p 155. Smoot then came back and won two more matches to take home third place. He won 3 over Pleasant Groves Darren Henry on Saturday night. e Smoot, the song of 7-- long-tim- Davis County resident Stan Smoot, is just back in Utah this school year after three years in Ohio where his father served as a mission president for the LDS Church. During Shandells stay in Ohio, the Viking junior learned plenty about wrestling from top quality coaches and athletes. Wrestling, according to Smoot, is a way of life in Ohio and surrounding states. "Were young and improving, said Thompson of his overall team, "This was a fairly tough tournament that was difficult to place in but we had kids get a victory or two before they left. Thompson said the attitude of the team is a light year ahead of last year and with Fisher and Smoot t Rob Warden of Davis, left, escapes the grasp of Box Elders Greg Watson during their championship match at 185 during the Layton tournament. Watson edged Warden, for the title. ali photosjim haskett 7-- 3, helping out in the leadership area, things are on the rise. Viewmont will be hosting a tournament of their own on Dec. 19 and 20. Other Viking wrestlers in the tournament included Scott Thomas 98, Dax George 105, Shawn Owen 112, Kevin Randall 119, Allen Freestone 126, Lance 132, Darrin Zesiger 138, Matt Morrill 145, Corey George Bar-racla- 167, and Bobby Romerez 185. BOUNTIFUL Bountifuls Jerry Staley feels things are on the uprise at Bountiful, despite the fact there is a very young team being fielded. Going into the Layton tournament, only two seniors existed on the entire team. Weve got some talented kids at certain weights, especially among the juniors, said Staley. One of the fine juniors includes Richard Eggett at 155 where he took sixth place in Layton last weekend. Richard has a younger brother Ryan who is battling at 138. The Braves appear confident in Jeff Black at eighter 12 or 105 and Mackie Lucio at either 19 or 12. 1 1 1 Lucio was a region champion for the Braves at 105 a year ago, perhaps one of the quicker kids on the entire team. Shane Olsen dislocated a knee cap and the Braves are hopeful he will be back for the Viewmont tournament at 126. Rick Johnson placed sixth at Layton last weekend at 132 and Coach Staley is expecting big things from him throughout the year. Johnson, a junior, is quite strong for his weight class. We need to push each other in practice, said Staley, Because weve got the makings of a fairly respectable club. LAYTON The bright spot for the Lancers in their own tournament was heavyweight Tim LaFette, whos been as steady and consistent as anyone over the past three years for Coach Mike Hansen. LaFette, according to Hansen, will be someone to contend with this year. He has certainly got off Laytons Tim LaFette grabbles out of a predicament with Box Elders Kyle Larson. LaFeete lost in the championship finals, 2-- 0. on the right foot by battling his way into the championship during the Layton tournament, before losing the title bout to Box Elders Kyle So it was just a takeLarson down that prevented LaFette from winning it all. "My feelings about the team became much better as the two days wore on, said Hansen, Tim and the rest of the kids generally got better with each match they had. 1 2-- 0. really feel pretty good about things. Besides LaFettes second place, Tom Moore gained a third place finish at 145 with a 1 victory over Wasatch's Jeff Wade. "Tom got noticably better with each match, said Hansen. Another bright spot was Tyler Sessions at 185 where he took fourth place, losing to Pineviews in the last match. Troy Talbot 1 Up until his last match, Sessions had improved a great deal. 7-- -5 Another placer at the Layton Mike tournament was Barnes who took sixth place. Other placers for the Lancers in- took sixth place. Hansen called Browns performance a nice job. Greg Loveless wrestled well during the Layton event, winning a couple of matches. None of our kids have had any real hard varsity experience, but despite that they came through pretty well, said Hansen, "And well get more competitive as things go along. DAVIS Were a slow starter, said Davis Jeff Isom, But in time we will start picking up the pace. With that however, the Davis High wrestling team made a fairly impressive showing at the fifth annual Layton High wrestling tournament by staking claim to fifth place with 100 points, the finest showing of any of the five Davis County schools involved. "We perhaps could have moved into fourth had some seeding mis- - er cluded Mike Brown at 98, where he Continued on next poge Davis Highs York Major (12) finds rejection at the hoop as he drives against a Roy opponent in the finals of the Roy basketball tournament Saturday night. . |
