Father Duffy preached a beautiful sermon on the "Ktlicacy of Prayer." 1 -; The "Children of Mary" of the Ca- thedral parish held a very large meet- ing last Saturday afternoon. K ? !. Mrs. John J. Ryan, sister of Rev. j Thomas H. Malone, received a cable- 1 gram Wednesday, May 23. saying that he had arrived safely at Cherbourg, J France, on one of the German-Lloyd 'i steamers, and would start immediately ' for Paris. He reported a very pleasant ! voyage. A most interesting programme, musi- j cal and literary, followed by refresh- i ments and dancing, was given Thurs- . day. May 24, 'betore an enthusiastic gathering of young people at Bourne's hall, under the auspices of St. Cecelia's l auxiliary to the Knights of St. John. The most notable features were a cake-walk, cake-walk, won by Miss Eva B. Trask and Master Frank Medina, and a whistling solo by little Virginia Schafer, who trilled "Whistling llufus" with such delightful de-lightful effect that she was repeatedly encored and whistled other 'rag times." Mrs. D. M. Gerry spent half a day in making the trophy of the cakewalk and when the programme was finished the huge pastry prize was cut and distributed distrib-uted and served with ice cream the audience. W. J. Nesmonger and Thos. Giblin sang a melody of national airs which pleased the young folks. Miss Sadie Maxwell recited the "Widow's Son," and the programme was concluded conclud-ed with a naddress by Mr. George O. Dostal. Miss Emma W. Herry, county super-. super-. intendent of schools, left Thursday, May 24, for a short vacation at Colo-' Colo-' iado Springs. -S' ' Last Wednesday, Memorial day, sol emn Requiem services were held at Logan Avenue Chapel at 8:30 o'clock, under the auspices of the Knights of St. John. The uniform rank was present pres-ent in a body. Father Casey officiated and preached the sermon. Miss Mary Louise Johnson and Mr. Charles Bliir were married at Logan Avenue Chapel last Thursday evening, Rev. Father Callannn officiating. John Spencer Newhouse and Arthur Famuelero were baptized at Logan Avenue Chapel last week. The old Cathedral has been razed to the ground, and workmen are now busy-hauling busy-hauling away the debris. Sundav, June 3, the children of the Logan Avenue school will receive their, first Holy Communion at the 8:30 Mass, and be confirmed immediately after. ( The children of the Cathedral parish who attend the public schoools will not make their first Communion until some time :n September. Mrs. Mar:- Atero, mother of New-Mexico's New-Mexico's governor, was buried from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Harry O'Bryan, last week. Commencement exercises at St. Mary's academy will take place June 18 at Irrmacu'ate Conception school, on June 14, and at Sacred Heart school on June 19. The Mav Festival for the benefit of Sacred He'art Church, which was held ' Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday of j this week was very well attended, j Dramatic entertainments were given j every evening by the Broadway Dramatic Dra-matic school, under the personal direction direc-tion of Robert E. Last week Mr. Lawrence Murphy of 1021 Chamra street received the sad news ofjthe. death of his brother. Rev. Dean Murphy of Irishtown, Ontario, which occurred on the morning of May 22nd. j He had been suffering from ill j health for a year or more. j His labors in Irishtown extended over a period of thirty years. j Rev. Dean Murnhy was beloved by , all his parishioners, and was respected ! by all who had the privilege of his ac- j quaintance. His kind greeeting and ! . wise counsel will be much missed, and j will be long remembered by many. He I was about 76 years of age.
