Show UPHOLD THE LAThe LA-The Carter crowd which was so lamblike when soliciting alms from the charitable and asking for transpor taU n cast by rail has developed its wolfish disposition and displayed its concealed fangs It was to be entirely peaceful in its march and lawful in Its methods But the seizure of the train in IjTtah county and the defiant belligerent i bellig-erent spirit exhibited by some of the reserves in this city expose the real nature of the movement The Governor and the executive and judicial authorities of the territory generally gen-erally are endeavoring to discharge their duty In protecting property and enforcing the laws I bearing on the disturbances dis-turbances that have been made They are Supported by the thinking people of this city and the only fault found with them comes from the Ignorant and excitable persons who are ready to resist re-sist anything that does not comport with their notions The Herald sympathizes with the unemployed un-employed who really desire to work for a living It has pleaded their cause from the beginning of the distress that has come upon them It desires to see their wants supplied and their sorrows relieved But it has no excuse for those loudmouthed champions of disorder dis-order whose labor is only with their unbridled un-bridled tongues who are hot with sedition se-dition and brimful of abuse for those who have helped them abundantly but whq cannot longer supply their demands de-mands As for the trainstealing tramps they should be treated as other violators of the law are treated They should be taught two lessons One is that people who earn bread by the sweat of their brows are under no compulsion to feed I menovho want to gain food and money by the sweat of their jaws Another is that the railroads are under no obligation obliga-tion to give them free transportation > I and that stealing train is larceny and resisting the officers of the law is a criminal offence It Is time that this shameful defiance of law and order throughout the country was suppressed by the local authorities Bloodshed ought to be avoided if possible But the executive power of each state ought to be applied to extinguish the baleful fires that are being kindled and to punish those who are guilty of building and setting them in flames It is cowardly and fat itous to shirk the responsibility that rests upon the heads of the several states by aiding in pushing the incendiaries towards the seat of national government govern-ment We are glad to note the zeal and the firm discretion of the Governor of Utah vhoshauld receive the cordial support of every patriotic citizen of the territory terri-tory and be backed by all the force necessary to execute the laws and prevent pre-vent the triumph of an impudent mob in seizing property and menacing the peace of the industrious people of Utah There are three excitable and pompous pom-pous agitators in this city who are plagiarizing the notorious three tailor of Tooley street London who formulated formu-lated a document commencing We the people The Salt Lake trio are not a trinity in unity for they are at discord dis-cord among themselves But they each demand to be heard and claim to speak as The People They will soon learn that neither they nor the lawless train stealing mob with which they have affinity are the people of Utah Also that the people of Utah do not sympathize sympa-thize with their foolirh notions or their stupid marching scheme though they do sympathize with the distress of the unemployed and are willing to help the deserving needy as far as possible If the men who desire to go east to find work could be lawfully assisted on their way that is the easiest and best disposition to be made of them But there must be no encouragement of lawlessness nor submission to mob rule The law must be maintained and sympathy sym-pathy for distress must not slop over into weak condoning of crime and pitiful piti-ful pandering to a sham General and a bogus army |
