Show McGAX MAKES A CITAAGE Xew Resolutions of Inquiry as to the Depression Washington May Consideration of the naval appropriation bU consumed the time In the House after the disposal adjournment of some routine morning business until In the morning hour among the bills and resolutions reported and appropriately appropri-ately referred was a resolution reported by Mr McGann Democrat of Illinois chairman of the committee on labor in place of one heretofore offered for the appointment of a committee to inquire into the business depression to give employment em-ployment to idle labor and to estrict immigration and for other purposes It was placed on the calendar The resolutions provide for the appointment appoint-ment of a congressional committee of seven three senators and four members of the House I Is to be the committees duty to investigate and report to congress within thirty days the cause of the Industrial In-dustrial depression responsible for so much distress throughout the country and what legislation will induce ant < preserve industrial and financial conditions that will offer speedy permanent and lucrative lucra-tive employment to the citizens of the United States Consideration of the naval appropriation appropria-tion bill was then resumed In committee of the whole Illegally Appointed Cadets A long and interesting discussion was precipitated by the offering of an amendment amend-ment by Mr Maddox of Georgia providing provid-ing that no part of the money appropriated appro-priated for the al naval academy o rJr be used for the support or education of naval cadets who at the time of their appointment appoint-ment were not actual residents of the congressional district they were appointed ap-pointed to represent The adoption of the amendment would entail the discharge of between thirty and forty cadets Mr Cummings introduced a substitute requiring the secretary of the navy on the failure of a member of Congress to nominate a cadet to fill a vacancy to appoint a cadet who shall be a resident of the district from which he is appointed ap-pointed The adoption of this substitute would not require the discharge of illegally appointed ap-pointed cadets but would prevent the repetition of the practice No action was taken on the amendment amend-ment for want of a quorum Two other amendments were agreed to one appropriating 50000 for a tug at Mare Island navy yard Cal and the other appropriatng 4150 for the construction con-struction of a bulkhead at the naval asylum at Philadelphia At 427 the House adjourned |
