Show H "Detective" Perverts Facts. B A recent article in the Panguitch Progress M purports to give the gist of a statement by J. 0. H Sandin of that placo respecting his employment H j . by the city ofiicials of Cedar City as a detective R to gather cv"'lence against violators of the liquor m ( laws, and u. the statements arc misleading we H J deem it the duty of The Record to correct the false M impression that has been given out respecting this LM city and its officers. M ' Under a tentative understanding with the city " council that his acts would be approved, the B mayor employed Sandin to secure evidence against M any one who might he engaged in the illicit selling M of liquor in the city. H Although Sandin was supposed to work quiet- H,' ly and without the know ledge of those engaged H,: in the liquor traffic, until he should secure auffici-H auffici-H ent evidence on which to base a charge, one of his m i first acts was to display his star where whoever H' cared to look might see, wheh act alone defeated - t , the very purpose he was supposed to accom- K plish. Hl After retaining his star four days his ap- K? pointment was revoked and his star taken from R him. In the meantime he had made an effort to purchase "lemon extract" and "ginger ale" from at least two of the merchants of the city, one of whom is a member of .the city ccuncil. The LLLr v' - city councilman refused to sell him the extract, r for certain reasons, and Sandin induced two small BT children to go to the gentleman in question and Ki, . - represent that they wanted lemon extract fcr H'" their mother. On this representation the counci!- Kl , man let the children have a bottle of "Shili-V "Shili-V '"? f "ing's" extract, Known' by every dealer in &e LLf ' country to bo one of the leading1 brands offered for B sale, and the children delivered it to Sandin. This H ...is the "catch" referred to in the Progress, and as B ' - soon as the mayor learned that the story was be- H ing circulated to the effect that one of the mem- Ht bers of the city council had been caught selling H : liquor he investigated the circumstances and Hp- when the facts had been learned, took Sandin's H star from him. K Inasmuch as Sandin was employed by the K city the mayor could do nothing in the matter of R a settlement with him until the next meeting of w the council. It was never the intention of tlse Hj ma:or or the city council to refuso him the wages H. to which he was entitled, and the amount dup him Ha was allowed the :r.ayor by the council at its last H regular meeting, and the mayor, if he has not H already done sc, will, according to his statement, K turn the amount due Sandin1 over to the attorney Lml who handled the matter for him after his depart- K ure from the city. B . There is no question but that the members of B f the city council are gentlemen of unquestionable H integrity and it wculd be far from either of them Hf to engage inthe surreptitious selling of liquor, ar.d H, the rumor that has been permitted to spread Hj through the statements of Sandin and the columns H of Progress are a direct insult to their honesty B ' ' and business integrity, Inasmuch as no name was B. mentioned by the paper , thereby leaving it open B to conjecture as to which of the ccuncil was B' meant. |
