Whether that means a genuine belief HJ that Utah voters now favejr Taft, or is merely HJ an expression of the desire of said represcnta H4 tlvrs Is a matter of doubt. It Is our opinion HI that no great proportion of Utahns have made HJ a delinlte choice yet. Undoubtedly many are Hi thinking kindly of Mr. Taft, for it Is under- He stood at this tlmo that the gentleman from HJ Ohio Is President Roosevelt's cholse to succeed HJ himself. The people of this state arc in hearty HJ accord with the president's policies, and his HJ wishes go far, but we are not inclined to feel HJ 'that the record of the governor of New York HJ has failed to make an Impression siiillclent to HE, raise a doubt In the mlndsof many. With Mr. HI Hughes out of thi! race, and the voters left un- Hi Influenced by scheming politicians or religion. HJ ists seeking to return a favor, Mr. Taft would Hi receive ninety-live out of every hundred votes HJ , in Utah. Fairbanks hasn't a look In; Foraker, HJ Cannon or Knox could not get a dozen votes on Htl their merit and Mr. Hoot, though pulling bet- HJ tcr than either of the others, would get no HJ great number. Hi But Mr. Hughes looks like a man of big Hj brain, good judgment and fearless nature. Ills H every act has brought him into more favorable Hh consideration and his speeches reach a chord H sWt 7 of responitveocM in the heart of every reader. He talks like a man who believes In and has a splendid conception of 'exact Justice. He has braved corporate antagonism for thebentft of the people and .he hassWown himself to be big enough and fearless enough to deny the, de-mand;of de-mand;of the people when tie felt their demands to be wrong. If Hughes stock continues to advance as rapidly in the neit fiVo months at it haa in the past six or eight, President Roosevelt and his friends will find the governor of Mew York well-nigh a match for Mr. Taft with all the federal support he now possesses. The public will do well to withhold definite choice until nearer time to select delegates to the national convention. |
