Show Two Views of A Debate THENTONV Feb. 17,-Our little nrick school house was packed with 1 he taxpayers of Trenton gathered to llitfn to the debato upon 'consolidation 'consolida-tion last Friday evening, February 14, 1 bcuveen County Superintendent Mc-Carney Mc-Carney and one of our school trustees, T. II Cutler. Mr. McCarrey brought nut many good points In favor of consolidation; con-solidation; ns also did Mr. Nelson, the , principal of our schools, taking Salt Lake county as a basis of argumint. No one present could question ,Mr, McCarrey's sincerity In the cause of iducatlon. He made a very earnest appeal In faor 01 his side of tho question. ques-tion. Mr. Cutler pointed out some Inconsistences In-consistences In Mr- Smith's lecture delivered de-livered at tho 11. Y. college. He also saw tho danger of politics and sectional section-al differences In our school system. He made a very good point In tefer-encc tefer-encc to the two colleges at Logan, showing where politics governed one Institution and wo lost most of the Important studies, but when the question ques-tion came up of making tho Ii. Y. 'col-lego 'col-lego a high school, politics did not enter Into the question and thecollege remained undisturbed. Tho debato waxed warm, both parties par-ties braced up to the subject. The people were much interested and saw much to be considered. They saw tho danger of accepting a new system without Hrst understanding It, when the health and safety of thelrchildren arc at stake. Would It not bo better to have this question debated In every town In the valley rather than lectured upon from one side only. We understand under-stand that Mr. Cutler did not get the $50 offered to any one who would oppose op-pose consolidation, but ho certainly deserved de-served it. Mr. McCarrey lectured atClarkston on Tuesday evening, February 18, and the people of that town have Invited Mr. Cutler to come up and give them a talk on the other side. On Sunday we were favored with a visit by Elders A. J.Merrill and Edwin Miles, of Smlthlicld, as home missionaries, mission-aries, which we considered quite a treat, as we arc yet in need of more people to select a variety of speakers fiom although wo arc taking hold of the good work with zeal and energy, and showing evidences of tapld growth and progress. There is plenty of room for good home seekers and we Invite that class to give us a call. Commissioner Godfrey Is here looking look-ing up the new road to Richmond, which we are anxious to sec built as soon as possible, as wo desire to get In close touch with our neighbor towns and advance in the scale of thrift and progress with them. TRENTON, Feb. 10. Wo had a debate de-bate Jiero the other night In which Supt. McCarrey and T. II. Cutler discussed dis-cussed "Consolidation," tde latter being be-ing "fornlnst" the proposition. Tom Is a good fellow and may believe ho is right, but there arc several of us here who do not agree with him, and we want tho people of Cache county to know It The .debate was quite Interesting and your correspondent will not deny that Mr. Cutler's pleadnig for the mother to protect her child from a G o'clock ride on cold wintry mornings had Its effect, but for genuine argument argu-ment he wasn't In It. Mr. McCarrey advanced twelve or fifteen pointed arguments why there should be consolidation con-solidation of the county school districts, dis-tricts, and evidently they were indlsj putable, for Mr. Cutler made no effort to answer any of them. He proved that politics would play a part, as ho says It did hi tho A. 0. of U., but that only sounded like Tom wanted to mako a political speech He forgot that that kind of politics has given the A. C. nearly .'100 more students than It ever had In its history Mr. Cutler also thought hauling students to school would damage their health, but ho forgot that they would be hauled 1 but a little furtner than they walk. 1 Ho tried to work ,up sentiment in j several ways, and ho partially suc-I suc-I ceeded, but at no time did he meet, or attempt to meet, Supt. McCarrey's plain statements. Most of us litre woulti llketoha'e consolidation put off a year or two,but few of us are against the consolidation plan, for the argument In Us favor Is too plain and conclusive. |
