Show Page 4 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume II, Issue V February 2000 Changes In Store At The Valley Market By Barbie Sunderland Ogden Valley News Staff The ink on the paper hadn’t dried when Roger Terry, owner of the Valley Market, put his expansion and remodeling plans in motion. Although Terry has owned the business for two years, it wasn’t until November 1999 that he also purchased the building that housed the business, which now enables him to change physical aspects of the store. “We hope to offer a more complete store so people don’t have to go out of the Valley to do their shopping, and to keep the Valley dollars in the Valley,” said Terry. Pending approval, the expansion will nearly double the current store size from 8,500 square feet to 16,500 square feet. Terry admits the current floor space limits the number of selections for customers. The additional space will allow for more variety and selection in all areas, especially the produce, bakery, deli and video departments. As a member of Associated Food Stores, the Valley Market already offers many competitive prices. Adding more space to hold more items will help to make prices even more competitive. Intent on keeping with the rural theme of the store’s exterior, Terry plans to carry the same theme inside with plans for remodeling the decor. “It suits the Valley way,” he said. One of the biggest challenges Terry sees is to change people’s perceptions and habits. He says many people utilize the market as a secondary store, sort of like a convenience store. He hopes that with the expansion, people will look to the store as a place for their primary shopping. Since purchasing the business in February of 1998, Terry has seen the sales volume increase by 30% to 50%. Although the growth in the Valley is a contributor to this increase, three changes he implemented upon becoming owner also played a role in this Tami Proctor shows off one of the new cash registers . 801-745-4000 2555 WOLF CREEK DRIVE EDEN AH EDEN,, UT UTAH STORE HOURS: MON.-SAT. 7 AM - 10 PM SUNDAY 7 AM - 9 PM Valley Market Winter Specials FREE 8-Pack of Western Family Hamburger Buns with the purchase of a growth: lower prices, more aggressive advertising, and an emphasis on customer service. Two areas not affected by the plans include the ATM and the real estate office. Terry plans to keep an ATM at the present site after Zions closes. According to Zions Bank, the branch is to be consolidated with the First Security Ogden Valley Branch in April. Some ideas include bringing in another bank or utilizing the space as a customer service center. Fishing and hunting licenses, dry cleaning, video rentals and possibly money orders could all be handled in this operate out of its office with the expansion occurring around them. A civil engineering survey is currently underway to review all aspects of the proposed expansion. Pending its completion and final approval from Weber County, Terry hopes to break ground by late spring or early summer and finish by year’s end. Zions Valley Market Branch to Close By Barbie Sunderland Ogden Valley News Staff Zions Bank announced plans to close and consolidate its branch at the Valley Market with the First Security Ogden Valley Branch effective Monday, April 17 pending shareholder approval of the Zions and First Security merger. Until the consolidation is complete the branch will continue to be fully operational according to Zions Bank Public Relations Manager Rob Brough. He says that the consolidation of branches in close proximity is for economic reasons. In Utah, 14 branches are being closed and consolidated with nearby branches, and 60 branches are being sold as part of the merger. The Federal Reserve Board and the Department of Justice approved the merger contingent on the sale of the branches. All that is needed to complete the merger is approval by the shareholders. Brough estimates the shareholder meeting to be held sometime in March. For the most part, employees of the branches to be closed will continue to work at the absorbing branches, says Brough. He said that some employees will have to be let go because of job overlap. He did not have information regarding the number of employees and the branches affected. If you have any questions regarding the consolidation, contact the Zions Valley Market Branch at 745-0835.
