Valley Elementary Names Geometry Bee Winners By Brian Weller, student reporter th Congratulations to 4 graders Carly Hirst and Mitch Jenkins, 5th graders Evyn Yeager and Michelle Paul, and 6th graders David Hedges and Will McKay. They have studied hard, and won Snowcrest Tops Weber School District in SAT Scores Snowcrest SAT test scores were rated at the top in reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, total reading, problem solving, listening, using information, prewriting, science, thinking skills, and complete battery, with an average of all scores at 61.6%. The next highest school’s overall average score was 56.1% from students at Rocky Mountain Junior High School. The state’s average was 54%, and the district’s average 50.8%. Snowcrest tied at the top with other schools in composing, editing, and total math. Snowcrest placed higher than the school district and the state average in all areas except math procedures. There is speculation that a higher reliance or dependence upon calculators has led to a loss of ability to demonstrate how a math problem is solved. Perhaps less calculator use at home and school—have more “no calculator days” a couple of times a week—with more written or hands-on manipulatives, would help build a stronger foundation for demonstrating math problem solving skills. It is interesting to note the correlation between Snowcrest’s high ranked listening scores and their several other top test scores. It is well known that higher listening skills allow for higher development in many other areas leading to higher student achievement. Having students write down a full sentence—that is dictated to them a couple of times every other day—would probably help increase the 15 second sound bite for which students’ brains have been programmed from watching television. Snowcrest Choir Performs in Winter Concert The Music Department at Snowcrest celebrated the acceptance of a grant proposal submitted to the Weber School District Foundation for purchase of special music that was performed at Snowcrest’s annual Winter Concert last December. world during holiday seasons by university, church and community choirs. The entire piece has nine movements and is outlined by a processional and recessional chant the Valley Elementary School Geometry Bee. On April 4th they will compete at the Math/Science Olympiad and Geography Bee, which is held at the Weber County Fair Grounds. We wish them luck and hope that they will study (very hard). Snowcrest Girl’s Choir. Student Geometry winners. The Snowcrest Girl’s Choir was presented with funds from the foundation to perform twentiethcentury composer, Benjamin Britten’s, famous “Ceremony of Carols.” This choral work was composed by the English composer, Britten, in 1942 accompanied by harp. It has been performed throughout the Sixth Grade Students Take Trip Back in Time to Egypt By A.J. Hicks and John Storey, Student reporters On January 21, 2000 the 6th grade at Valley Elementary hosted the whole school to go back in time to Egypt. Every year at Valley Elementary 6th grade students make a tomb of Egypt. Every sixth grader made and displayed an artifact that could have been found in a pharaoh’s tomb. Most of the students dressed up as ancient Egyptians. The people who didn’t dress up told everybody about the projects—like tour guides. Students sat in barges driven by slave masters and oared by slaves. They stepped out into the tomb as they were greeted by the three oracles who foretold their doom or success in the afterlife. The pharaoh himself and Nefertiti ushered them into the dark chambers beyond. Over all it was a very fun project, and a fun way to educate the little kids in the younger grades about Egypt! Brian Weller acting like an Egyptian. and is approximately thirty minutes in length. “Ceremony of Carols” is a difficult and demanding piece of music especially for a junior high choir. The Girl’s Choir worked with great enthusiasm on the piece to have it ready for their Winter Concert. Mr. Wooden and the Snowcrest Girl’s Choir are extremely grateful to the Weber School District Foundation for providing the funds to secure the music and the harpist for this event. Preceding the Girls’ Choir performance of “Ceremony of Carols” the Beginning Band, Beginning Choir, Boy’s Choir and Snowcrest Concert Choir performed a variety of seasonal favorites and a few selections that celebrate the European heritage of the holiday season. |
