Springville could take control of first place in region if they defeated the Lady Dons on the Devils' home turf. The gym was electric as the Lady Dons' defense and inside game looked to derail the Red Devils' fast-break offense. The Lady Dons had prepared well for the highpowered Springville offense. SF double-teamed the Devils' leading scorer, Lexi Eaton, holding the top scorer in 4A to two first-quarter points. The Dons' strategy led to controlling the boards and fast breaks, and in the blink of an eye SF led 10-2. Springville settled down and SF allowed Clements to score the next 11 points. The Dons had balanced scoring, with Redd scoring six, Nielsen five, Huntsman four and Emerine four, and Spanish Fork led 19-18 to end the first quarter. The Dons and Devils stepped up their defensive effort in the second quarter. The score was tied at 23-23 when Redd blocked a shot, was called for her second foul and headed to the bench. Plagued by turnovers, fouls and passive offense, the Dons allowed Springville to run the fast break and score easy baskets as the Red Devils exploded for 24 points, led by Mason with eight easy points in the paint. The Lady Dons did not attack the basket, scoring only five points, and Springville ended the third quarter with a commanding 59-34 advantage. The Lady Dons showed pride in the fourth quarter. Skyhawks down Lions Lady Golden Eagles Alexis Richardson STAFF WRITER On Feb. 2, 2010 the Salem Skyhawks girls basketball team played the Uintah Utes. The Skyhawks won 43-30. This was the second time that the Skyhawks have played the Utes. Their first game with Uintah was played well, and they started out that game ahead, and kept it up the whole game. So this time they expected it to be the same. The first quarter didn't start like they thought it would though. The Skyhawks sat on two points for a while and didn't move much. Halfway through the first quarter, Hailey Ingram got an elbow to the face and started bleeding. She was taken out and Jerika Durfey came in and made two quick three-pointers, which got the game going. The first quarter ended with a score of 11-6 with the Skyhawks in the lead. In the second quarter they kicked it in gear and really started playing. Ingram came back into the game and made a trey. Amanda Tuttle also made a three-pointer to bring the score up to 21-16 at the end of the quarter. The third quarter was slow for the Skyhawks. Hanks made two shots in this quarter and that was about it for the team. The Utes took advantage of the situation and started catching up. The Skyhawks have had a habit of slowing down in the second half, and the third quarter looked like the beginning of that slow down. However, in the fourth quarter, the Skyhawks broke that trend and scored almost as many points in this quarter that they had the rest of the game. Most of the points were due to Lyssa Hanks. She made at least 12 points just in the fourth quarter, making her the highest scorer of this game for the Skyhawks — with at least 20 points the whole game as the Skyhawks won, 43-30. The Golden Eagles outscored Payson 15-7 in the second to take a 33-27 lead going into the half. The Lions never regained their first-quarter fury, as the Golden Eagles shot 65 percent from the line to seal the deal, 52-43. Freshman Aleksa Gappmayer led Maple Mountain with 11 points.
