Loafer Sentinel Rees WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2010 • B5 Courtesy photos APPLE FOR THE TEACHER: At Rees Elementary on Jan. 26, 2010, Craig Harvey from Horrace Mann presented the "Crystal Apple Award" to Jacquelyn Searle for her excellence in teaching. She has taught for 10 years, where she has mastered the art of classroom management. When her colleague, Mrs. Jenise Rowley, was asked why she thought Jacquelyn received this award, she said, "She is just a great teacher! She cares about each individual student in her class and wants what is best for them." Jacquelyn is willing to help anyone. She is also a good listener. Courtesy photos SNOW DAY: Jan. 22, 2010 was Snow Day at Mt. Loafer Elementary! This day was a reward for all students with good citizenship during the second term! Every student was able to participate, Mt. Loafer students are great citizens. Students had a snowman building contest, slid on the hill, and enjoyed hot cocoa and doughnuts. TEMPLES AND TOMBS: On Jan. 29, 2010, students from Mr. Applegate's and Miss Weather's sixth grade performed the production, "Temples and Tombs." Students have been learning about Egypt. "Temples and Tombs" was the culminating event to the unit. Parents and the student body were entertained with songs and dances about mummies, pharaohs and pyramids. SPELLING BEE: Third-grade students at Rees Elementary participated in a school spelling bee sponsored by Mountain America Credit Union and Triple T Heating and Cooling. Mrs. Jamie Voorhies, Mrs. Danielle Christensen, Mrs. Brenda Beyal and Mr. Jeff Ballard hosted class spelling bees, and the top two spellers from their classes participated in the school spelling bee. Congratulations to Ramses Bolanos from Mrs. Christensen's class for placing first in the school spelling bee on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Salem PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN: Army Medic Jeff Collins, currently serving in Iraq, visited Mrs. Peterson's Kindergarten and Mr. Bradley's third grade classrooms while home on a two week leave. Mrs. Peterson's students wrote Collins prior to Veteran's Day. In response to the "Thank You," Jeff Collins presented Mrs. Peterson's and M^ Bradley's classes with American flags, which Collins packed while on an Army mission in Iraq. Mrs. Peterson's students want to proudly serve the children of Iraq and are currently collecting school supplies. Jeff is the father of Elijah and Ammon Collins. Starting in October, the they began learning to play a musical instrument called the recorder. They practiced long and hard and learned to play a variety of music. In December the students put on a concert for parents and other community members. The 5th grade classes also visited classrooms around the school to share their talent with the other students. * |
