Students could dress up like mountain men and in the afternoon they participated in various activities such as, making arrowhead necklaces, beaded key chains, headbands and eating fry bread, beef jerky, nuts, fruit and root beer. FALCONS: At Foothills Elementary in Salem, students (grades K-6) were awarded the Foothills Falcons award for being exceptional students in their classroom during the month of January. Finalists from each of the four third grade classes competed. The Spanish Fork Rotary Club provided all third grade students with dictionaries and trophies for the winners. !n the end, the winning spelling word was "unavoidable." Nathan Lawrence took first place and there was a three-way tie for second with Jace Randolph, Kylee Crook and Briley Young placing second, and Tia Lee taking third place. East Meadows Courtesy photos HEARTS FOR HAITI: East Meadows Student Council is promoting Hearts for Haiti! Hearts for Haiti allows any student or staff member at the elementary to purchase candy conversation hearts for their friends, teachers or peers. The candy hearts sell for ^L.OO each, and the student council members will deliver them. This heartfelt program runs Feb. 2 through Feb. 12. All of the proceeds will be given to help those struggling in Haiti. Many thanks for opening your hearts and wallets for this wonderful cause, and thanks to the creative and thouehtful East Meadows Student Council! Courtesy photo SPELLING BEE: The annual Spelling Bee was held on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at Park School in Spanish Fork. The competition included fourth through sixth grades. The competition was tough. One could tell these students had studied hard for this event. Congratulations to all the participants. A shout and a cheer to the finalists. In third place was Sidney Alofipo, a fifth grade student; in second place was Macky Alofipo, who is a sixth grade student and in first place was Lindsy Goodell, a fifth grade student. EXPLORERS: East Meadows 5th-grade students traveled to Diamond Fork Campground where they had the opportunity to snowshoe and learn about wildlife. The students learned that snow is an insulator through an experiment they conducted with jello. The students discussed wildlife habitats and adaptations animals undergo when the weather turns cold. There was a very creative and fun animal relay, in which students demonstrated migration and hibernation. Everyone had a great time, and the winter flakes that fell added to the experience. SCIENCE FAIR: On Wednesday, Feb. 3, the East Meadows 5th and 6th graders presented their projects at the science fair. Family members and students from younger classes came through to see the posterboard displays and learn the results of a large variety of tests and studies.
