Show WE CANNOT ADVERTISE THEM. A few days since, the JOURNAL received an order to insert the advertisement of a doctor who professed to represent a certain "Medical and Surgical Institute," and who desired to announce that he would be in the leading towns of this valley, on stated days. As the JOURNAL is resolved not to co-operate [cooperate] with medical quacks in [unreadable line] to this "Medical and Surgical Institute," nor to the faculty connected with it. We merely wish to state that the reason why we declined the advertisement of the institution and its representative who proposes to visit this county, was because we could not satisfy ourselves as to the standing of either. For anything we know or wish to suggest to the contrary, the faculty of the institution mentioned may be gentlemen of first class professional standing and ability, but until they furnish us references to satisfy us that this is so, we cannot insert their advertisement nor recommend them to our community. A day or two ago we were offered the advertisement of an eastern house dealing in patent medicines and liquors. As a part of the mission of the JOURNAL is to discountenance the use of these articles among its readers, the advertisement was promptly declined. By refusing such advertisements, the JOURNAL, of course, lessens its revenue, but it is confident that the people among whom it circulates will not see a paper languish for support, that takes the stand we have taken upon these matters. |
