Show SUMMARY OF THE NATURALIZATION LAWS. For the information of our readers, we publish the following summary of the naturalization laws. All persons who are of foreign birth, must become naturalized, either through the naturalization of their parents, or by taking out their own papers, no matter at what age they came to this country: 1st. All aliens over the age of 21 years, coming to the United States, may at any time after their arrival, declare their intention to become citizens. 2d. Two years after having made a declaration of intention to become a citizen, and within a period of not less than five years after his or her arrival in the country, an alien may obtain his or her full papers. 3d. An alien who arrived in this country when under 18 years of age can obtain his or her full papers on reaching the age of 23, without making a declaration of intention to become a citizen. 4th. All aliens who came to this country when under the age of 21, whose parents were naturalized before they, the children, reached that age, are citizens by virtue of the naturalization of their parents. 5th. In the case of an alien who declares his intention to become a citizen, but dies before taking out his full papers, his widow and children are citizens. 6th. A female who is the wife, widow, or daughter of a native born or naturalized citizen, and who is over 21 years of age, may vote in this Territory. |
