Show SCARED AND ASTONISHED. Last Wednesday evening John Hollenbeck, a young man of neglected training, who was lounging around the Logan House, saw officer Everill leave the place, and supposing there was no other officer near, began some loud bravado talk about there not being anybody in Logan who could lock him up, &c. He waxed warm with his theme, displayed his "bull-dog" in a swaggering manner and became loud-mouthed and very profane. Officer Crooksten, unknown to the valiant youth, had been sitting at a table reading when he began his tirade, and had witnessed his behavior. At the proper juncture for dramatic effect, the officer arose, approached the youth, grasped his shoulder and told him to "come with me." The youth's face was the picture of mingled astonishment and fright. He wilted "like a tallowed rag in the sun," and instantly became as meek as a lamb. Two of his friends begged the officer to let them put him to bed, agreeing that he would settle with the police magistrate next morning, which he did. |
