Show t'se of Car Coupling, Railroads first started changing Ezra Miller patented his automatic coupler in 1863. By 1870 it was in general use in the middle and western west-ern states and a few years later in use on most of the railroads in the United States. The Pennsylvania railroad in 1878 made the Janney coupler, which was patented by E Janney 'n 1877. standard equip! ment for its passenger cars. In 1887 a recommendation of the Master Car Builders' association for the adop-tion adop-tion of vertical plane couplers dis-continued dis-continued the use of the pin and link couplers on all roads. The Janney coupler was made standard by this association in 1888. |
