Show State Sportsmen to Investigate Possibility Oi New Game Bird for Southern Utah In orler to determine whether the chuckar partridge has poss!-bilities poss!-bilities as a game bird in Utah, the Fish and Game department ha Initiated a two-fold project The first part of this project consisted for a visit by departmental depart-mental personnel to Nevada to examine ranges where chukar partridge were successful. An Inspection In-spection of the southwestern part of Utah was then made to find areas comparable to those areas in Nevada. After the selection of sites, a program was initiated for the acquisition of chukars or chukar eggs. Initially the plan called for the purchase or acquisition through the trading for wild chukars. This, however, was" found to be impossible since"" no birds were available and would not likely bo available for some years to come. The second alternative was to purchase the eggs and rear and condition the birds prior pri-or to release. Each week a shipment of eggs arrives at the farm where they are hatched. When they reach the proper size and age they will be subjected to a conditioning program pro-gram in th locality where release re-lease Is anticipated. The entire program Is being carefully studied stud-ied under the upland game bird study project, and the sports-men sports-men of Utah should soon know whether or not they may look forward to hunting chukar partridge. |
