Show p- - i. && $ iff psr1 p5 f Jp Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 29, Drug, alcohol training offered All elementary teachers, and junior and senior high school health teachers in the Emery District have been given the opportunity to receive training in the implementation of the 2 K-1- Alcohol, Drug and Tobacco Prevention Education Program. This training was under the direction of Emery Jones of Four Comers Mental Health; Roma N. Powell, the Emery District supervisor of in- struction and staff development; and instructors Deanna Mecham and Chris Stucki. Led by these individuals Emery District educators examined the and issues of students at-ri- sk risk factors for substance abuse, and the role of the 2 prevention program in addressing the needs of k K-1- at-ris- youth in the classroom. Mr. Jones distributed curriculum materials to all teachers that ce i enhance the family involvement component of the 2 program. Mr. Jones familiarized the teachers with K-1- the new Working Together: School and Family Program and presented information related to the importance of involving parents in the prevention process. Through a grant written for the Emery District by Roma Working with J.A. Miles, . be taught the general emergency telephone number, and where to find additional emergency numbers in the manner of true showmanship, fireman J. A. In the Miles, Chief Lee Matchless (chief of fire safety, Salt Lake City Fire Department) and Michelle Powell Harvey performed while delivering a powerful message on fire prevention. Mrs. Harveys message: Dont Play With Matches and Fire Is A Tool were told in song. Mrs. Harverys original song has been heard by some 46,000 students in the Salt Lake County School District. The melodious message came through loud and clear, Fire is a tool not a toy! Fireman Jay delighted the students with his entertaining narrative that taught the students to Stop, Drop, and should their clothing Roll, ever catch on fire. He taught the students of the life saving smoke alarm. Fire Chief Randy Jensen of Cleveland city said that he was pleased to have the program presented in our schools. Utilizing magical tricks and entertainment of the highest quality, these volunteer helpers brought students a delightful program and a most important message. A special thanks is due to those who so willingly shared their time and talents to the deliver life-savin- g messages. Parents are encouraged to see that smoke alarms are installed and escape routes are planned in the event a fire should occur in their home.
