In March 1988, the percentage of households with a telephone reached its highest reported level 92.9 percent. In absolute terms, the number of households with telephones has progressed from 78.4 million in November 1983, to 85.3 million in March 1988. The CPI showed a 4.5 percent increase during the first six months of 1988. Telephone services increased only 0.2 percent, following a drop of 1.3 percent in 1987. Long distance calling prices dropped 5.1 percent for interstate calls and 2.5 percent for intrastate calls. Local service price indexes (including taxes and customer access charges) climbed 2.7 percent during the first two quarters.
