' BLM told the COUNTY NEWS Monday that the EE had been received in the Salt Lake office, and a copy sub-m sub-m itted to the Council on Environmental En-vironmental Quality (CEQ) for approval. They expect to have some available in the Cedar City office the latter part of the week, and they will be distributed dis-tributed as soon as it's released re-leased by CEQ. There is a 30 day review period before any action could be taken, so it will be at least the middle of , July before it can be approved. approv-ed. Last word from Alumet is that they are ready to begin as soon as the EIS is approved. Beginning date will be determ ined by the time it takes to secure financing. Amendments to the Clean A ir Act, passed by the House last month and now before the Senate should erase all air and other environmental problems and clear the way for construction. The Alumet project is a joint venture of National Steel, National Southwire and Earth Sciences. They propose pro-pose to build a mill to process pro-cess alunite into alumina at the rate of 500 tons per year. They also will produce several sev-eral fertilizers as by-products of the operation. Construction Con-struction costs are estimated at between $450 and $500 m illion, and would take three years. |
