Show B Wednesday, October 23, 19f Daily Hcraid fie Hypertension increases risk of heart failure Free info on problem of osteoporosis From the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute According to the Arthritis Foundation, osteoporosis is a serious heakh problem that causes bones to lose mass. This loss of bone can cause bones to fracture easily. More than 24 million people in the United States are affected by this serious problem." Until the age of 30, new bone replaces old bone at a faster rate than it is lost. People reach their peak bone mass at age 30. After the age of 40, bone mass slowly declines. The first warning sign that a person has osteoporosis could be a broken bone. Researchers cannot predict exactly who will develop osteoporosis. Females, people with Caucasian or Asian descent and people who are thin or small framed are all at high risk of developing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can be prevented by increasing calcium intake, avoiding smoking, avoiding heavy alcohol use, doing weight bearing exercises, and maintaining a healthy weight. The Arthritis Foundation offers a free brochure on osteoporosis with tips for prevention and treatment. Male and female participants, who ranged in age from 40 to 89, underwent periodic examinations for approximately two decades beginning in January 1970. The researchers, led by Dr. Daniel Levy, director of the Framingham Heart Study, found 91 percent of the 392 participants who developed heart failure had high blood pressure, making it the most common risk factor for heart failure. High blood pressure accounted for 39 percent of heart failure cases in men and 59 percent in women. "This type of analysis provides important information about the factors involved in the progression Students of all ages need more sleep Students of all ages may be missing a key ingredient to good adequate sleep. grades "Sleep is probably the most important period of the day for processing new information." said Dr. Bruce D. Perry, a child psychiatrist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Missing sleep, Perry says, causes most of the day's experiences to be stored inefficiently in the brain. Lectures heard, chapters, read, interactions with teachers are harder to remember if the brain is sleep deprived. "Rather than cramming information for a lest, students are better off studying in smaller chunks and getting enough rest to process the information properly." he said. "Otherwise, you end up storing the information in short-termemory and forgetting it in a few weeks." Sleep is critical for young students as well. "Children have many new concepts lo learn in schixil." he said. "A good night's sleep not only lets m $JJf2fjJ4 ARIKS (March Giving in a si mni; desire solves a problem. Students who are sleep deprived tend to be more irritable and have difficulty concentrating. Perry feels that parents often underestimate sleep's importance. Perry recommends ai least eight hours of sleep for adults and 10 or more hours of sleep for children. "Sleep helps the brain organize new information, so literally, in the morning you wake up smarter than you were when you went to bed," he said. jjear Ann an(ers: A jew months ago, you reprinted "The Elephant in the Room" by Terry Kettering. "Prior to this siuJv the magnitude of the contribution of blood pressure to the of heart failure had not been icioj-nied.- " Other risk factors r heart failure include previous heart attacks, diabetes and heart diiease. The participants with high blood pressure were categoried as having either Stage I hyperten.i n (blood pressure of mm Hg millimeters of mercury 4 and not on medication), or Stage 2 (160 100 mm Hg or greater, or currently on blood pressure medication). Among those with high MikkI pressure who developed .heart failure, 76 percent of the men and 2 percent of the women had Stage 2 or greater high blood pressure The average age for developing heart failure in this study was 73 vears in men and 78 in women. "This studv." savs Levy, "reinforces the concept that blood pressures in the higher range (and of long duration) increase the risk of heart failure." However, concludes Levy, "the good news is that a prevention strategy based on earlier detection and more aggressive treatment of high blood pressure may reduce the incidence of heart failure in the general Sharing stories can help those who are left behind By JEANE DIXON For Oct. 24 1 Hypertension (high blood pressure) significantly increases the risk of heart failure, according to a recent study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a component of the National Institutes of Health. The risk was found to be two times higher in men and three times higher in women than in those with normal blood pressure. Heart failure, in which the heart loses its ability to pump enough blood throughout the body, typically develops gradually over the years. The severity of the disease depends on how much pumping capacity is lost. Normally, pumping capacity decreases with age, but the loss is significantly more in heart failure and often results from a heart attack or other disease that injures the .heart. To evaluate the contribution of high blood pressure to the development of heart failure, data were obtained on more than 5.000 people recruited for the NHLBI-fund-e- d Framingham (MA) Heart Study, one of the largest and most comprehensive ongoing investigations of the prevalence, incidence, and of heart failure." explains LOSE 2-- 5 20-ye- LBS.
