Storms were expected to continue to bring rain across the Great Lake region today. Rain mixed with snow was expected across Illinois and Michigan. The Carolinas, Virginia and Maryland were expecting isolated severe thunderstorms with wind gusts of 60 mph. Rain was expected to move through western Pennsylvania, New York and into Massachusetts and Vermont by late evening, possibly causing some flooding. Showers may dominate in the Pacific Northwest. Light snow was forecast for the higher elevations of northern Utah and western Wyoming. Winds were expected to subside across southern California, which should help in the battle to contain wildfires. Record snowfalls hit of Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas Tuesday. One person was missing in Maine. A main that carries water about 25 miles from Sebago Lake to Portland was broken in at least four places when floodwaters apparently washed away soil supporting the pipeline.
