"I may m ike the motion." said board meiWT Ih.n Berman. Ihe anorney was quoted in a copyright story in The Salt Lake Tribune, which said seen board members favor firing Pingree. who has been genera! manager of the UTA for 19 years. It said B'ermnn and Salt Lake County Commissioners Randy Uoriuehi and Brenl Overson met Monday in a Layton restaurant to discuss I'ineree's ouster with four p v ' : ' - .r i be asked to fire manager UTA will board members, two each from Salt Lake and Weber counties. One of the Weber County members was Greg Haws of Hooper viewed as a key vote. Haws said he had not decided what he would do at the UTA meeting today at which the firing was lo be proposed. "I don't share the emotion of my fellow board members from Salt Lake County, but I share the concern." Opposing sides disagree on whether ihe board has 13 or 14 members. If it is 13, seven are enough to fire Pinuree. if it's 14. eight votes would be needed. The issue is cloudy because the term of member Manuel Romero has ended and his successor has not been seated. Those supporting believe Pingree Romero serves until a replacement is named. Those opposing the general manager believe Romero is off the board and cannot vote. Pingree would only say: "This is putting me in a difficult position. 1 respect the board for what it is struggling with." The UFA has jeen embroiled in controversy over establishment of light-rai- l. Some board members who are going after Pingree oppose light rail, but contend it is his actions with regard to appointments to the board that have prompted the move lo oust him. Salt Lake City and county officials have been at odds over which of the governments is entitled to name Romero's replacement. Pingree reportedly made telephone calls to UTA board members in August urging that they replace Romero with Mayor Deedee Corradini's appointee. Arthur Smith, president of the University of Utah and a light-ra- il supporter. County commissioners wanted to appoint former state Sen. Stephen Rees of Taylorsville, a light-ra- il critic. The board deferred replacing Romero until February to give the Legislature time to clarify board appointment procedures. The anti-Pingr- "has happened 1 ti-- . f " - w.- Jlr 1 - ' - - : movement in secret, behind the scenes," said Corradini. "This is not the way to have good pub';c policy." " ' Drfdfe o 4,000 new voters register in Utah In SALT LAKE CITY ( AP) a registration drive that ended Tuesday, the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project signed up as many as 4,000 new Utah voters, about 40 percent of whom are Hispanic. The group is pleased with the results of its voter registration drive, said local project organizer Archie Archuleta, although it fell short of its goal to register 4,000 new Hispanic voters. "So many decisions have been made recently that we haven't been a part of," Archuleta said of the Hispanic community. Nationally, the group has registered an additional 1 million Hispanic voters, bringing the total to about 6 million, according to the organization's Alfredo Cruz. The organization compiled its figures from a review of Hispanic surnames on voter registration records nationwide, Cruz said. In Utah, Archuleta says the effort to get Hispanic and other voters to the polls will continue through Nov. 5. The group, which started the drive in August with three paid staff members and 25 volunteers, plans to remind those who registered to vote and provide trans- portation for those in need. Cruz says the national arm of the organization will add a media blitz to encourage voting on the tele- two major Spanish-languag- e vision networks, Univision and Telemundo. It's been a hectic five weeks, said Col. Bentley Rayburn, commander of the 388th Fighter Wing, the 34th's parent organization. The 34th had been on its way home once before when the squadron's cargo planes were ordered to turn around and return to the Gulf. "They had been packed and loaded and headed for the States," Rayburn said. One cargo plane was in Dover, Del., and another in England when they were sent back, he said. The 4th Fighter Squadron left Oct. 8, allowing the 34th to come home. Rayburn said he hopes the 4th will be able to return in about a month. To I IJree I- - CJ- - 1 poor |
