By Given Hunter Librarian seems to me a lot of eligible senior people in this area miss out on a lot of pleasant listening good dinners and good times Why? That’s what we have been been asking each other at the Center We invite talk write and plead but so many of you seniors refuse to come Our Christmas birthday party was much good absolutely delightful-food (all free too) and outstanding 42 people entertainment Only attended Our January birthday potluck had more good free food and a fun 25 people ly were there Those that miss out on these denied have opportunities only themselves of enjoyable times and the uplifting feeling that comes with being with friends and neighbors in their community Or is it that you don’t want to associate with your friends and neighbors? All of which leads me to a desire to chastise those people who should be to these functions and purposely decline to come We have been writing this column for a year now trying to entice you into wanting to attend these events planned especially for you and to be a part of this organization that is here for you But GIRL SCOUT NEWS Winter camping was what Girl Troop 1021 had on their minds Friday Jan 11 when their weeks of planning and training finally paid off The four girls Annabeth Long Victoria Andrews Tiffanie Hunt and Annette Peterson had a lot to learn before they attempted the trip however They had several meetings where about fire they learned the basics building and other survival skills also discussed They hypothermia nutrition and frostbite Thursday night was spent frantically packing last minute items When the girls arrived at about 5:00 Friday evening they found they had a lot of work to do First of all they looked for three good campsites two girls to a site Their two leaders Pat and Sandy Long had the last place Then they looked for their firewood It was getting dark rapidly and the girls were still struggling with their fires Their fingers and toes and the tents still were numb weren’t set up When they finally succeeded with their tents Camp A started to cook their foil dinners was having a Camp B however harder time By the time their tent was up the fire had gone out They tried frantically more to gather wood a while but after not their cooked succeeding they dinners at the Main Camp Then the three camps went to bed in the hopes of getting warm while it At 5:00 in the morning was still dark Camp B woke up to a Scout 28: Tuna croquet- Jan 30: Hamburger Wednesday stroganoff Jan 31: Minestrone Thursday soup in Senior Are you interested Citizens Day at the Legislature? There are bills for the mature folk Get your name to being discussed Albert if you wish to go We had a fun party last Friday Too bad more people don't show up Millard Scout News The annual Boy Scout Winter Derby will be held this Friday and Saturday Jan 25 and 26 on the LaVoy Kimball farm southeast of the dump Scout registration is 4 to 5 pm Friday Scouts' families are invited and encouraged to attend Wearing an emerald once Dorothy Barkdull By By Ruth Zmitravich Jan was thought to make one an eloquent speaker it Cluff Conoco Tire Service & Multi- - Mile DEALER Brad Cluff Nationwide Limited Warranty Full Tire Line AUTOMOBILE TIRES HOAD the majority of you feel it is a degrading thing to be classed as a Senior Citizen and to be seen in the Center at Senior Citizen functions Some we have talked with and invited seemed horrified at the thought It seems to me that it is a privilege to be a Senior Citizen to have the years of experience and the wealth of knowledge and wisdom accumulated through those years In reading and learning about other Senior Citizen the state organizations throughout and nation their Centers are filled the participation is heart warming and the delight expressed by many of the Seniors is that there couldn't be a nicer way to get together and have a little enjoyment True you may have your clubs and church which are fine but at gatherings those there are the younger adults who tend to avoid the older ones like bad apples At the Centers everyone is in the same age group and we have a great deal in common with one good times to recall and some bad times too True we all have some wrinkles and greying hairs but it's the feeling of having had the same experiences the good Winter Camp Fun??? Birthday Surprise 21 Girl Scout the January Brownies surprised Duane Bartholomew with a birthday presentation at Duane’s Food Town Duane is the Brownie Girl Scout Sponsor so the Brownies wanted to do something special for him The girls presented him with a birthday card and a booklet made by the girls to commemorate this event They sang and put on a skit for him One January 28 there will be an AGC rollerskating fundraiser at the Pod in Fillmore and the bad that seems to bind us closer in friendship Some people have commented that if we just were not called "Senior Citizens” they might be interested in After giving it some attending thought it is a perfect title We are all citizens and to be a senior means not just "older" but also "superior" and “top ranking"! So what is it that makes you want to shun people of your own age or admit you are in an older age bracket? It's a well known fact you don’t mind being Senior Citizens when the cheese and butter arc to be passed out to those 60 and over All you seniors are there anxiously awaiting your free gifts from the government and the turnout of those over 60 is almost 100 percent Since this is voluntarily going to be my last article written for the Senior Citizens in this area regret it must end with such a note of rebuke However figures tell us there is a dire need for something to be done In Kanosh there are 121 eligible citizens and one only couple faithfully attends! Meadow has 68 Two couples and somecligibles times two or three widows attend Flowell has 31 eligiblcs and one In Holden there are couple attends 114 Seniors and only four or five attend Scipio has 69 eligibles and none attend but that is somewhat understandable because of the distance from the Center We forgive you Scipio Fillmore is where the Center locaicd has the worst attendance of all Of 363 eligibles about 40 attend! Now we realize that there are some of these people from the East Millard County area who cannot attend even if they wanted to because of being But they are just a small minority So this means that aside from the 50 or so people that come from time to time the vast majority do not ever participate Let me cite one example of a very Koosharem participation: small community near Richfield is the newest Center in the state They 100 have an almost percent attendance and love it This Center is here for you to help make days and evenings a little more enjoyable and fun You are retired your children are grown and gone you finally have time on your hands and you can spend some of it at a place provided for you where you can visit have lunch play pool quilt or whatever you feel like The bus will even come and pick up up and deliver you home again if you don't drive or feel like driving What more can one ask? Perhaps some of you have some good ideas as to what activities at the Center should be We welcome your suggestions and ask you call either Paxton at Center Albert the or yours truly Evelyn That’s all folks!
