R o p m Paratroopers fill Cedar Valley sky in engineers training exercise By MARC HADDOCK About 200 paratroopers, along with a lot of heavy construction equipment, left North Carolina very early Saturday morning in nine Air Force cargo planes. Almost six hours later, at exactly 5:55 a.m. as scheduled, they made a via stop in Cedar Valley parachute. Four bulldozers, a loader and a scraper were all parachuted to the ground as the first three planes in d the drop passed over the followed was That by spectators. almost 200 men about 15 minutes later as three more cargo planes passed over and parachutes filled the skies. That drop was followed by a less spectacular jump as three more chutes dropped. "That must be the generals," someone in the crowd conjectured. The drop was part of a major exercise for the engineer contingent of the Army's Rapid Deployment Force. Most of the paratroopers were from the 307th Engineer Battalion of the 18 Airborne Corps from Ft. Bragg, N.C. The men and equipment will be d used to build a special assault air strip near Camp W.G. Williams which straddles the Utah-Sa- lt Lake County line. The new strip will replace an existing air strip and will be used for training in landings on assault-typ- e strips as well as for jump training. Most of the equipment for the construction project was flowti into Salt Lake International Airport and convoyed to Camp Williams. Lt. Col. Philip Peay, facilities management officer of the Utah National Guard, said it would take 26 landing one every 45 minutes to complete the move of heavy equipment. Construction of the airstrip is expected to take about three weeks, during which the engineers will move 125,000 cubic yards of dirt, 15,000 cubic yards of gravel and 6,000 cubic yards of clay. The early morning hours were chosen because of the calm, cold air which slows the paratroopers' descent.
