However, he does not cut the wood beforehand, but cuts and shapes each piece individually then carefully cuts, sizes and fits the next piece around the first one. He sometimes needs to cut and reshape pieces of wood because, like a painter using a brush, he just didn't get the effect he wanted the first time. "Actually I really didn't invent the technique," says Bullock. "The process is an ancient one known to the Egyptians and Romans. Most people doing marquetry these days do just fancy geometric shapes and other things. As far as I'm aware, I'm the first person whose ever used the method for portraits of people." Bullock will have 11 or 12 pieces on display during his show at Dixie College, which opens April 19 with an artist's reception at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center and continues through April 30.
