Lehi's baseballers insure themselves a tie for second place Lehi's baseballers dropped two games to Union last week but redeemed themselves Tuesday by winning both ends of a double header with Grantsville. Those victories insure the Pioneers at least a tie for second place in Region Nine. "We made a few mistakes here and there against Union," said Coach Len Allen, "but the kids are hitting the ball well, they're enthusiastic, we're not discouraged." Shane Barnes was the hitting hero in the Grantsville outing. He was eight for nine at the plate, helping Lehi's offense while doing a good job fielding the ball in center field. He ended up with 12 RBIs. Nattress hit an inside the park homer and had three doubles for the day. Lucero and Barnes were on the mound for Lehi, Bob Barnes pitching the first game and a couple of innings of the second. Lucero took over and did a fine job. If Lehi keeps its second place finish, they will automatically qualify for the quarterfinals next week. The third place Region Nine winner will have to play off before gaining entry to the quarterfinals. Coach Allen is confident his boys will do it. "They're excited. Union's tough, but I'd like to get another chance at them," Allen smiled. All the Lehi batters went to work against Grantsville with Nattress, Tuckett, B. Barnes and Baum hitting a couple of nice sacrifice flies. Palmer smacked one, Shane doubled, Tuckett singled, Baum singled and the beat goes on. Lehi continued their effort throughout the first and second games, winning by scores of 4 and 15-Wasatch has to make up two games with Grantsville and until these games are played the playoff picture is still cloudy. Union has won the region title but the quarterfinal picture will depend on - results of three more games. But after 11 innings the fan watched the best game of the tournament end as Don's bag of tricks ended with Smith on third waiting to tie the score and Roberts on first to win.
