But that doesn't make it any easier to accept. Dr. Welcker began his administration under a cloud of uncertainty, with procedures of his predecessor coming under close scrutiny and public criticism. "We saw this coming before we ever unpacked our bags," said his wife after a emotionally strained district board meeting which saw Welcker resign and be replaced within hours. In the more than two years he was Superintendent, the Alpine School District was subject to continual review by special interest groups, a legislative performance audit, a joint Utah Attroney General and Utah County Attorney investigation and threats of a grand jury investigation. Over the past few months he has been forced to walk a tight-rop- e which balanced him between making the administrative changes demanded by the board while protecting school administrators he may have felt were one-ma- By MARC HADDOCK us rfr o Coupon Coupon Coupon Coupon Coupon Free Drink!! with purchase of fk D Hamburger and Fries FREE 16 oz. drink Free SO I I $195 Expires j i 2nd East Main American Fork COU PON Membership o I 10 Buy Lifetime U LV VALUABLE Q Get two movie rentals P " FREE!! 4i Expires Am. My neighbors, I mean. How can they enjoy spring when all it means is work? I've taken the easy way out, and all I have to do is sit back and relax. Because I don't have a yard. Well, I have one, but . it's a maintenance-fre- e yard, so to speak. At least for the moment. There's no grass to mow. There are no shrubs to maintain or trees to prune. . There is dirt, and rocks (lots and lots of rocks), and bits of $reen scattered here and there as the land reverts back to its natural, wooded state (that means weeds. ) Out back there's a hill that used to be topsoil. It was placed there by a g soul years ago and left to settle and harden and make a home for even more weeds. It makes a great place for the kids to play, so I want to keep it. (My wife says it must go.) A maintenance-fre- e yard is a marvel. While all my neighbors slave away at their lawns and gardens, making sure everything is just right, I can sit back and Work my way through the latest Dick Francis novel. I can tell they are all envious, because I get the strangest looks from them. You'd think they wanted me to fix the place up a little. But I'm not stupid. I know that as soon as that first seed of Kentucky Blue Grass sprouts I, too, will become a slave to unfeeling bits of life that on their own have no power over an individual, but collectively can rob a person of his or her days off and free hours and turn those long, lingering summer evenings into a nightmare of toil.d'm still mad at the legislature for not doing away with daylight savings timel) Let my neighbors scowl. I'm in no hurry to see greenery on my yard. Just so laziness won't be seen as my main motive for this unorthodox position, let me explain a few other reasons for keeping my yard in it's current condition. - " 756-805- 1 Wanlass, latest piece, "1908 - The Big Race From New York to Paris." Very close to the home where I grew up was a hill we called, appropriately, because of the big M on the hill which could be seen for quite a distance. The hill wasn't majestic. It didn't tower over the community. It was small with a round top and friendly features. I would play jon that hill all summer long, roaming through the sage brush, climbing to the top and looking at the town below, everything tiny in my child's eyes (this was before I had flown on a jet and learned what 'tiny' really was), and making clay figures from what we called the'clay ' banks" and baking it hard in a makeshift kiln. I loved But it's not like that anymore. Just like all other hills near towns, it has become a subdivision, with people building homes where no one would have considered building a home 20 years ago. And you can't roam free when there are homes all around. But now I can have a little piece of that in my own back yard. Why would I want to level that all out and plant . grass? Instead, I think to myself, why not search out some sagebrush and a prickly pear or two and plant those instead. Then all I'd have to do is add some volcanic rock revisited. and voila! it's A little bit of my past for my children to enjoy right in my own backyard. Also, I'm very "into" natural things (at least where work is concerned). And leaving the yard in its current state, growing the plants nature, in its wisdom, has randomly thrown there, seems like a more natural way of dealing with a yard. It would put one in tune with his or her environment, bring one closer to the earth without all that grass in between. So I'm going to hold firm. No blade of grass shall defile my property. No human hand will interfere with Mother Nature's handiwork. The yard will stay in it's present state and become a little bit of my youth. At least it will until it stops raining long enough for the ground to dry and I can level the dirt, clear the rocks, contour the fill dirt, plant the ll, 5 f Expires p.m. Mon. l Sat.
