Show H TRUTHS. M The absurdity of the democrats B thinking they arc strong and can elect M their ticket is well shown by the vote M in the city at the .election a year ago M which was as follows by wards: m Anicr. Rep. Dcni. H First ward 2475 2025 1231 H Second ward 2226 1870 1027 H Third ward 896 1658 940 H Fourth ward 1247 1308 886 H Fifth ward 1713 806 553 H Totals 8595 7736 4638 m Which is the stronger, the rcpubli- fl cans with 7736 votes or the democrats H with 4638? m M The appointment of Anthony V. M Wins to the vacancy in the Apostolate M of the Mormon church was altogether U unexpected, but none the less jtidici- M ous. He is an able, earnest and pro- M grcssivc man, in the prime of life, M with a thorough acquaintance not 011- M ly with the affairs of his creed but M with those of mankind at large. The M appointment has received generous M mention from all classes of people, M even the Tribune paying Mr. Ivins a W veiled compliment, which is as near M as it ever gets to the real thing in M speaking of a person to whose bc- M liefs it is opposed. H M Colonel Squires has returned from M attending the G. A. R. encampment M at Saratoga and a visit to his old M home in New York and other cast- M em cities. He says the only thing M that will prevent the encampment of M 1909 being held in Salt Lake, will be m the probable unvailing of a statue M of one of the heroes of the war to be M erected in Washington, D. C, in 1909, M in which case the encampment will M 'lie held at the capital. In that case H Salt Lake will get the next encamp- N ment without fail. H M The "Americans" are laying p.ans M for the registration of persons who M have no right to vote and for the rc- M gistration of individual voters in more M than one voting district. Registrars M should be careful to see that no fl names get on the lists fraudulently. M There will be a strict look out for il- fl legal voters and if any arc caught U they . ,1 be promptly bailed to pri- 1 M The p. m. edition of the Tribune in M a recent number contained the fol- H lowing choice editorial morceau: M "Mormons arc brought up to be- M lieve that the president of the church M is infallible, that he cannot make a M mistake, that if he ever docs make a M mistake it is not for them to question, M but merely to obey." M In other words, certain things arc M impossible, but whin they occur don't M say anything about it. M Those who base their mining in- M vestments or operations on what is M going on in the exchanges just now M arc not far-sighted enough to do well M at the business, and this refers to H other times as well as the prcscn. Both the republican and democratic headquarters arc now in full blast, the former in the spacious rooms formerly former-ly occupied by the Commercial National Na-tional bank on Second South, and the latter in the Windsor hotel on Main street. Both arc commodious and well appointed, as well as being excellently manned, and callers arc always made to feci at home. Utah manages to hold up her corner cor-ner of the great national fabric in the matter of scandals and the crimes growing out of them. The Beers killing kill-ing at Ogdcn with the resultant developments de-velopments will serve to keep our reputation in such respect in good order till the next one comes along, which will undoubtedly be here on time. Speaking of the republican candidate candi-date for mayor, the Tribune says be is the man "who said he couldn't be elected before he was nominated." Certainly not. It would be anything but sensible for him to suppose his election would occur ahead of his nomination, and Dr. Plummet- 1 a sensible man'. Judge C. M. Nielion, who has been a strong democrat most of his life, has joined the republicans and is working for the ejection of the republican re-publican ticket. He likes the policy of President Roosevelt and the administration ad-ministration and thinks it would ,be wrong to put any stumbling blocks in their way. The great ball games between the Chicago and Detroit teatns, for the championship of the world, arc of sufficient suf-ficient interest to attract great attention atten-tion in Salt Lake right in the heat of our political campaign. So the bah contest must be a battle of the giants sure enough. Chairman Snow's polite invitation to voters generally to cast their ballots bal-lots for candidate Morris and his associates as-sociates will doubtless be accepted by quite a few, all of whom would hr.ve done the thing desired without any special invitation. It is a good thing for- the "American" "Ameri-can" managers that the law provides no penalty for making false returns on a party canvass; otherwise some of the industrious anvasscrs might be in for good stiff terms. The political caldron is only simmering sim-mering now; next week it will begin to boil, and from that on the noise of the bubbling and the volume of escaping es-caping steam will overcome all v.hcr effects in these lines. . Drum corps have their uses, and so have fake offers to bet, but they don't win over those who do a little thinking think-ing on their own account. One more defeat kills the "American" "Ameri-can" party for good and all; so as Blucher said at Waterloo, "Up and at 'cm'" |
