Transacted Tho board of education met at 730 last evening withPresident Scott in the chair and Messrs Young Newman Armstrong Nelson Pike Colbath Johnson and Snow 1i attendance P L Williams tho boards attorney reported re-ported that the amount of taxes enjoined in the tax cases was 4900 Ho expected that ttc question would be determined at the coming session of the supreme court The claim of Taylor Romney Armstrong Arm-strong represented that they held note for 5000 given bj the trustees of the Eleventh school district and they wanted the cash Referred to the committee on finance Miss Lizzio Koini one of the public schoolteachers S school-teachers tendered her resignation on account ac-count of ill health Accepted The building committee reported that the Fourteenth ward school building has been finally completed and there was due the contractor about 87000 Accompanying this was a communication from Architect Monheim m which he recommended that the building be accepted and that the penalty pen-alty against Contractor Baldwin for delay be not enforced as the delay could not be avoided and tho contractor had lost between be-tween 4KO and o000 on the building because be-cause of the advance in the price of material ma-terial Mr Pike thought it might be well to find out whether there was any mechanics me-chanics lien on the building but on Mayor Scotts statement that lien would not hold against a city building this was dropped Mr Johnson stated that he know thero had been great difficulty in obtaining build Jug material Other members stated that on investigating investigat-ing the matter they had come to the conclusion con-clusion that Mr Baldwin was not to blame tor the delay n o zt luuiiuu LU pay uiu uuuuumur uicepu tho building and not enforce the penalty was carried I P L Williams to whom was referred the claim of Hanlon Benson who were awarded a contract for erecting the Fifteenth Fif-teenth Ward school building and aid not get a chance to carry it out and who therefore there-fore claimed damages forl700 the amount of profit they would have made reported that the parties were entitled to some i compensation but he thought a few hundred i hun-dred dollars would satisfy them As a i matter of law the measure of damages would be the profits they might have made if the contract had been performed Referred Re-ferred to the committee on buildings P J Moran offered to put in the Fourteenth Four-teenth ward building a 50gallon boiler and heating apparatus for 110 Referred to the committee on building Mr Armstrong of the committee on furniture fur-niture reported that another carload of desks had been ordered from the Grand Rapids company The two school bells had arrived and were ready to be hung Adopted The committee on teachers reported that another room in the exposition building had been fitted up for school purposes They had instructed the superintendent to extend the holidays from Friday until the first Monday in the New Year The committee com-mittee recommended that Harpers series for supplemental readers be adopted that east and west side high schools be consolidate consoli-date d into school Fourteen and that the superintendent utilize in that school the teachers now employed in the east side school the consolidation to take effect immediately im-mediately after holidays Adopted On motion of Mr Pike the committee on buildings was authorized to make such disposition dis-position of the east side high school building build-ing as might be deemed best as soon as it becomes vacant The committee on finance to whom was referred the matter of compensation for P L Williams as attorney of the board recommended re-commended that the compensation be not fixed but that Mr Williams be required to furnish bills for services from time to time The committee also reported several accounts referred to them The same committee sent in the following important report In accordance with the provisions
