inadequate to meet the demands made upon them by the city which has I taken on such a sudden growth Immediately Immedi-ately upon assuming the management I began be-gan preparations for extensive improvements improve-ments and have made them as fast as money could accomplish it We have expended ex-pended something like two hundred thousand thou-sand dollars on the two works The Electric Elec-tric Light works are now not only fully Ito I-to the needs of the city but far in excess We have a capacity for about seven thousand ¬ thou-sand incandescent lights and the whole city is only using about twelve to fifteen hundred Wo can therefore accommodate the public at short notice to five thousand lights more 1 sincerely hope there will he demand for them as wo would like to make interest the money invested which I we have not begun to do The eras works only had tvnntvnnp ro S torts for the manufacture of gus when I assumed charge We are just finishing twelve additional retorts which we expect to start on Saturday or Sunday next It will therefore be seen that there will be no lack of gas to meet every possible demand and it is also known that notwithstanding I the fact that there is considerably over 000000 invested in the two plants the stockholders are not getting a dollar in dividends div-idends of earnings for nearly a year on the contrary they are putting money in as fast as they can hire men and get material ram r-am surprised at the onslaught on our company com-pany last evening being made by those who should be acquainted with the facts We are doing all any human could do to serve the public and they will be served to their satisfaction All I ask is that it bear in mind the very short time which I have had to make the above improvements The only reason that our improvements are not ready is that the Laclede FireBrick Fire-Brick company of St Louis with whom we had contracted for our material had their works totally destroyed by fire after having taken our contract which caused us a delay of probably two months No one would certainly bo unreasonable enough to claim that this delay under those circumstances circum-stances could have bean avoided FKASK H DVE Manager Gas company and President of the Salt Lake Power Light and Heating company The question at this time of the year with the ladies is What can I buy for a gentleman Call on of course is exactly the same providing ten hours per day of work were guaranteed the employees held several sev-eral meetings and could not get the superintendent super-intendent to comply with their on yesterday company commanders at the fort were noticed moving quickly to their respective company quarters Something was on tapand in a twinkle orders to prepare pre-pare for an immediate advance to Dakota were given Knapsacks were speedily fled with warm winter clothes blankets rolled rations in abundance drawn tentage and camp equipage gotten ready and in less than an hour everything was labelled I for the land of the Indian Messiah The rfeason of this extraordinary and for the residents of Fort Douglas unprecedented excitement was a lengthy message from General Brooke ordering Jour companies of the Sixteenth and four of the Twentynrst regiments of infantry about 425 men and forty officers to move at once The objective ective point is Fore Robinson in northern Nebraska a near point to Pine Ridge agency in South Dakota from which point the battalion commander is ordered to report re-port to the department commander for further fur-ther orders The route to be traveled is to Ogden via the Union Pacific railroadthence to Fremont Nebraska thence by Fremont Elkhorn Valley railroad to Crawford which is only a few miles from Fort Robinson Rob-inson A wire from General Brooke at 12 m yesterday temporarily suspended the movement yet it is beyond all doubt that tho command will move within fortyeight hours at the very farthest When the Fort Douglas garrison takes the Held our readers read-ers will have all the news from the front from our special correspondent who will be among the warriors to go Tbe post last night was a city of excitement and every rumor gains a
