Show Iditorial A Congratulatory During this fall's Welcome Week and in the summer mths previous to it, approximately 350O freshmen and 00 transfer students saw the results of the Orientation mmittee's year-long planning and work. Almost $6,000 was spent on Welcome Week activities d summer mailings alone. Parents Day and the Union Open House were new ditions to the Welcome Week program and judging )m the amount of people that attended, were successful. Also, the Orientation 'Committee planned and carried t a summer quarter orientation for new freshmen and msfers. Reference group leaders were on hand to wel-me wel-me 200 of the 300 new U. students at a morning brunch. During last year, the Orientation Committee also onsored a winter quarter lecture series. No matter how successful any program is there is ways room for improvement. We feel that the reference groups that took place rst on the agenda were misplaced. The idea of reference oups is to have an upperclassman talk to the freshmen iout the University and all its aspects and then answer lestions. On the first day the first thing in the morning e freshmen don't have many questions to ask. The ference groups could be better placed, perhaps on the ;cond day when the freshmen are floundering in unan-vered unan-vered questions. It is also unfortunate that the committee and entire felcome Week program received so little support from le remainder of the student body. Even some members : the committee were lax in carrying out their assign-ents, assign-ents, thus leaving the bulk of the work to a few. Those who signed up to assist as reference group aders did not show up after several meetings of prep-"ation prep-"ation for the actual reference group sections. On the whole, the results of the Orientation Commit-re Commit-re have indeed been impressive and a vote of thanks to -ie committee is definitely in order. But something more in order. The job of being the student chairman of a committee f this magnitude and importance is a challenging and me-consuming one. The student chairman who carries nt this job does the University and the student body a feat service while he commits "academic suicide" him-ilf. him-ilf. We think it would be wise for the University to insider giving this student a tuition waiver in the future 1 partial repayment. Congratulations to this year's Orientation Committee, J-chairmaned by Dean Virginia Forbes and student Kent yd, for its outstanding service to the University and ie student community. |
