Show STATE MllIT WILL NOT CAMP WITH REGUlARS War Department So Decides in Adopting Report WILL DISAPPOINT GUARD I Several Intermountain States Expected to Participate Adverse Reports Forwarded War Bureau Bu-reau Regarding Citizen Army One of Causes TRIBUNE BUREAU MS Postal Telegraph Bldg I Washington D C July 17 The militia of the far Western States will not be Invited to join In maneuvers with the regular troops this year That much was decided today upon the adoption adop-tion by the Secretary of War of the report of the provisional general staff Militia in the Department of the Lakes Is Invited to Join the regulars at West Point Ky In October and the State troops In the Department of the Missouri Mis-souri which Includes Nebraska Kansas Kan-sas Iowa Missouri and Arkansas will be Invited to the maneuvers at Fort Riley This decision will be a disappointment disappoint-ment to several Intermountain States some of which have been contemplnt ing an opportunity to encamp with the regulars at Fort D A Russell Wyoming Wyo-ming or some far Western point but since the matter was taken out of the hands of the department commanders and referred to the general staff there seems to have been little hope held out to them Attention has been called In these dispatches to the adverse reports received re-ceived here regarding the Western militia Since the war with Spain there has been little prospect that the Guards would have an opportunity to ace actual service and their ardor has consequently ceased explained a staff officer today He thought It far easier to build up a citizen army when war threatened than In these piping times of pence But It was only to meet these conditions that Congress appropriated money to help the Guards and Joint maneuvers are for the same purpose to interest them in the work and to make them efficient and ready for an emergency It Is thought that arrangements arrange-ments would have been made for the Western troops If I the reports had shown them better organized |
